for big cash _ - Brise repeats Rob Brise’s all-relative rink of Smithers won the annual Ter- race cash bonspiel for the third time. This time he took home $1,688 for beating Smithers clubmate Don Palmer 10-4 in the final. The. Brise victory spoiled Palmer’s crack at the Northwest “triple ‘crown’? of curling. Palmer had earlier won the Prince Rupert cash event, and was looking forward to notching Terrace and the upcoming Smithers spiel to his belt of vic- tories. Here he won $1,125. {t was a second straight vic- tory for Brise at the Terrace. event, He also won a few years back. Sixteen teams had entered the men’s side of the three-day curl- ing exravaganza. A last-minute dropout resulted in a revision of all denominations of cash prizes.. The ladies’ side of the spiel, won by Prince Rupert’s Wendy Atchison,- was also short one team from a roster of eight. Atchison had to steal two in the 10th end to count a 5-4 win over Janice Himech of Smithers. Atchison won $600 while Himech settled for $400. Brise opened the playoff with a 6-5 loss to Ken Blanes of Ter- race on ‘A’ side. This dropped him to ‘B’ where he needed two wins to be among the eight qualifiers for the big money, Brise came through with a 9-2 victory over Jeff Davidson of: Terrace, then a 9-6 win over Ken Bazanski of Prince Rupert. — In the eight-team playoff, Brise eliminated Bob Baase of Houston, Bruce Kerr of Prince Rupert knocked off Ken Giles of Smithers, Palmer took out- Rich Green of Terrace, and Larry Reinboldt of Smithers bounced Larry Burke of Terrace. The four losers — Green, Baase and Burke — each won $186 for their effort. Fitzpatrick returns to minors. Despite a successful winning debut for Los Angeles Kings over Chicago Blackhawks last week, Kitimat’s netminder Mark Fitzpatrick has been shipped back to New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League. Apparently Mark’s recall earlier from ‘the minors was a three-game deal whereby he’d play one game and backup the other two. Los Angeles said it wasn’t a_ recall-due-to-injury situation — just the Kings’ long- range plan for bringing the rookie Fitzpatrick along slowly. . in local spiel — “ed up $656. ‘third and fourth, Carol ‘American-born goalie Tom Bar- Giles, . from Spokane in 1987). Wade next. aot in NHL? ~ Will the Northwest area soon — have a second goaltender enter- ing the NHL scene? - ee A weekend move seems to be leading in that direction. The Buffalo Sabres traded star rasso to Pittsburgh Penguins. In exchange for .Barraso, a former rookie-of-the-year: and . Vezina trophy winner, the Sabres picked up defenceman Doug Bodger and left winner - Darrin Shannon. ' §o, how does that affect our area? oo Last June, the Sabres drafted Terrace netminder Wade Flaher- ty from Victoria Cougars of the Western Junior Hockey League. , Wade attended Sabres’ training camp in the fall,. but was sent back to Victoria for another season to gain experience. The trading of Barrasso leaves Buffalo with three goalies on their roster — number one Dar-' ren Puppa, backup Jacques Cloutier, and third-stringer Dar-. cy Wakaluk (a junior drafted It obviously means Buffalo has confidence in the current goaltending, arid. likely that Flaherty stands a better chance to crack the team’s lineup for 1989-90. . It would have to be an emer- gency measure (regular player hurt) before the Sabres would think of bringing up Flaherty. Therefore Wade will no doubt play the entire year with Vic- toria. | In any case, Barrasso’s de- parture does open the door a bit wider for Flaherty.
