A float that’s seaworthy: New dugout to be used as a training vessel Two cedar dugouts carved by Kitsumkalum natives will keep traditional skills alive. Not only the carving skills which helped win the Riverboat Days ‘‘Most Outstanding Float’’ award, but the skill of manoeuvering the sensitive craft as they were in centuries past. According to Kit- sumkalum Chief, Cliff Bolton, the band now has three dugouts, ranging from 22 to 52 feet in length, and native children as young as three can begin learn- ing the ancestral art of navigating our waterways. by Tod Strachan Kitsumkalum natives are a tribe of the Tsimpsian nation whose history in the Northwest dates back to 2800 B.C., and un- til the 1900’s they travelled throughout the Northwest as freely as we do by car today. They were a proud and self- sufficient nation worthy of respect and fear, and even at the turn of the century, they still far outnumbered the white popula- tion, But a few years later, the nation who had used their dugouts to fuel the Hudsons Bay fur trade were a sick and demoralized minority. In the 1870's, the canning in- dustry had been established at the mouth of the Skeena. A large majority of the native population moved to work at the Port Essington Cannery, and the Timberland Horse Show judging results Names are listed in order of placement: HI POINT JUNIOR C: Bryant Schwengler. Hiswids Charro - Daren Schwengler; erosion of their culture began. In 1907, Grand Trunk Pacific survey crews dynamited and levelled Kitsumkalum homes and forcibly moved them to their present location; by 1908 when large numbers of white set- tlers were moving to the Terrace area, only two native families re- mained. From that point until today, it has been an uphill struggle for the Tsimpsian people to regain their dignity and pride. But they’re winning. Locally, Kit- sumkalum Village has organized an economic development pro- gram that is rapidly gaining them leadership in the communi- ty, and Kitselas Village is also working on an ambitious hous- ing project and other economic programs. And with this resurgence of native dignity is coming a renewal of cultural ways — an example of which are the Kit- sumkalum dugouts. Fifteen- year-old Gordon Wesley recent- ly demonstrated his skill at manoeuvering the newly carved 22-foot Coast Salish dugout at Lakelse Lake. Cliff Bolton says the craft, originally designed as a racing canoe, is ideal for learn- ing the art. Once they’ve mastered this canoe, young natives can graduate to the six-man, 35-foot model which is a copy of the dugouts which once provided D.P. ROAD HACK STAKE: A Little Class - Cathy Jackson; Double Night Watch - Terrace Review — Wednesday, August 10, 1988 23 the Kitsumkalum canoe Two cedar dugouts carved by Kitsumkalium natives for Riverboat Days round out a fleet which will be used to teach young people traditional skills. They learn the basics in a 22-foot Coast Salish racing dugout before graduating to the six-man, 35-foot model above. When they've mastered both crafts they will graduate to the pride of the fleet, an 11-man, 52-foot racing dugout. the only means of moving freight on the Skeena. The one difference in its design is the 18-inch beam which makes it more suitable as a racing hull — it provides speed, says Bolton, but it is also ‘‘tippy’’, deman- ding tremendous skill on the part of the ‘‘pullers’’, The ultimate craft is the ll-man, 52-foot racing canoe which is even narrower, requir- ing a master’s touch but capable of much greater speed. ‘‘It takes a lot of practice to get it going and keep it upright,’ says Bolton. But he says it will also provide the ultimate challenge and experience for young natives. Children who learn how to handle these crafts at a very young age, Bolton says, will grow up in an environment that allows them to step into a dugout as easily as into a car — and another link to their heritage will be returned. Construction begins on gas bar Terrace Shell’s $250,000 renovation to open a gas bar on Kalum St. began recently, and owner Giannino Pretto says he will be open for business about mid-September.
