Baking hobby is now fu IN 1989 Sheila Monkman heard an advertisement on the radio, looking for people interesled in being vendors at the Skeena Valley Farm- ers Market. Baking is a hobby Sheila enjoyed, so she contacted Lena Chapplow, and be- came a regular vendor at the market. She’s well known for her ginger cookies, and her pies are so popular people buy one, then come back right away for anolher — al- though sometimes strange reasons, Sheila tells of one couple who bought a blueberry pic, soci after purchasing the firstome. viscose bon os ‘Tt seems they left the first pic in the car to be guarded! by their faithtul mute J gucss a dog can get very hungry while waiting for his masters to finish shopping at ihe market, The secret of those yummy pies and baked goods was something Sheila learned in childhood. She’s the 4th youngest of 11 children and was raised on a small farm called Sun Rise Two River, 11 miles cast of Fort St. John. Her family raised vegetables and sold eggs. Sheila’s mother sold butter to the local co-op store for 50¢ a pound. Sheila always pitched in with all the work on the farm, but she especially cn- joyed baking. She moved to Terrace in 1986 with ber husband Wayne and their son and daughter. Baking continues over Thursday and Friday as Sheila works long hours, making sure that there is a good stock of cinnamon bread and buns, white bread, pies and tarts. Sheila’s selection is grow- ing as she gels requests for certain baked goods. One of her most popular items are the pinger cookies. On Friday, Sheila finishes the baking and packaging. By Saturday moming she is tired fram her busy week, However, when she meets all the friendly people and children at the market, she feels it is worth the work. kk kkk We often remind people not to bring their dogs to the market. She taught in Kitimat, Terrace and the Nass and now has a new book coming out about the beautiful Nass valley. The book, called Up Your Nass, details the five years Elvira spent in the Nass when she was a teacher and . then principal at the Nass River Elementary school. Elvira began her teaching carecr in Kitimat at the old Riverside elementary school in the 1950s. From here she J. went on to teach part-time in Terrace at Skcena High, where she taught music in several grades. From Skeena, Elvira trans- ferred to Clarence Michiel and thea to E.T, Kenney Primary. Then she and ber husband moved up to the Nass. Elvira and her husband Max first moved to north- west in 1956, settling in Kitimat. There Blivra worked for the post office and did. some substitute work at the Kitimat high Sale On June 48 to 28 HERE 'N THERE YVONNE MOEN school. Max was the last employ- ee to work at the Saguenay Kitimat company. After the company disbanded, Max found work as a welder for Columbia Cellulose in Ter- race, During those years Elvira worked | throughout the school district, . teaching niusic fo many students, — Eventually: the couple moved to the Nass and El- vira started teaching at the Nass River Elementary School. 4 She also had a column for the old Terrace Herald, called “‘Letters from Nass Camp.’ In the summers Elvira would travel from the Nass back down to Victoria ta go lo university. Eventually in 1971 she graduated witha Bachelor of Education in English and music, From the Nass, the couple moved to Masset and that’s where Elvira ended her teaching career. Now she’s living back in Victoria with her sister, She’s taken up watercolour painting and plans to take four of her recent paintings to Sooke for an art show. Elvira also has kept up her interest in music and is one of the piano players for the Monerey sing-a-long and is a substitute pianist for the Saanich Songmen. And if that and writing a book wasn’t enough, she’s also busy volunteering at nursing homes and senior centres.
