Gold mine begins open pit operation A GOLD MINE oulside of Dease Lake north of here has started working on an open pit operation just days after receiving approvai from the provincial government. The Golden Bear mine will take ore from three different zones of _its Kodiak deposit and use a heap. ~ leaching process to extract gold. Golden Bear had been process- ing ore fram another location -using a. more conventional mill operation but says heap leaching “will result in greater recovery of gold. Heap leaching involves spray- ing a water solution containing cyanide over gold-bearing ore. - The solution absorbs the gald which can then be filtered out. ‘Common jin American states such as. Nevada, heap leaching is used in only one other spot in BC. “We'll be ready to slart getting gold from the process in three ‘months time,’’ said mining com- _ pany chief financial officer Peter Tredger last week. He works for North American “Metals Corp which is a subsidiary - of Whealon River Minerals Ltd. + The company estimates it will have 325,000 tonnes of ore mined, . stacked, crushed and ready for leaching by the end of October. ; Leaching will take place over the winler by which time the company will be ready to take ore from another location followed by a third location in 1996, “Approximately 27,000 ounces are expected to be recovered by the end of 1994, with an addi- tional 19,000 ounces in 1995,” Said a company press release last week, The Golden Bear mine had been running out of ore from ils current mining site and has al- ready laid off some workers. Company officials predict the Kodiak deposit, developing other new deposits which it is now ex- amining and re-processing ore in the slag heap left from previous mining operations will add anoth- er five years of life. Tredger said the company is able to move fast on development because it anticipated carly ap- proval from the provincial - government, **With the onset of winter, we had io take a chance. We didn’t want to miss this season,’? he said. The Kodiak deposit was found just last year and speedy develop- ment work was aided by a fast” response from the provincial government, Tredger added, ‘‘We were most encouraged by the co-operation of the govern- ment in this,’’ he said. Establishing the heap leaching operation will cost between $12 and $13 million with the expecta- tion the company will recover - Grants received COMPANIES WITH northem ore deposits are on the list of those receiving exploration grants ‘from the provincial government. Forty-six exploration and mini-' " mg companies are to get $2.2 mil- ‘lion grants from the provincial government’s exploration incen- tive program.-- Another 10 are to get $200,000 under the same program. ‘Included on the list is Interna- -- tonal Skyline which has the “Johnny Mountain mine in the Is- kut. Valley, Newhawk Gold Mines which has the Sulphurets®: - property north of Meziadin and Prime Resources (owned by Homestake) which has property at Eskay Creek now being devel- oped. Golden Bear mine near Dease Lake is also getting money for exploration work. Applications for--201 projects were rectived from’ March 22, when the program was. announc- ed, to closing date of May 27, They were evaluated on quality, potential, financial commitment on the part of companies and need for government help... i The grants:are: part‘of:a‘threc- *. year program called Explore B.C. Park Report by Greg McDonald i BCR Parks } $23 million in gold. ‘The certification of this pro- ject demonstrates our govern- ment’s commitment to ensuring that the mining industry continues as a vital part of our local econo- my,’” said NDP MLA and cabinet minister Jackie Pement . whose Bulkely Valley-Stikine riding takes in the mine. The ore body was first devel- oped by Chevron which brought in Homestake in the carly 1990s. Homestake estimated it lost $60 million (U.S.) on the operation which experienced problems with the ore and with production. Homestake was able to use a $13 million (U.S.) tax credit from the sale to offset profits else- where. Homestake remains a major gold player in the northwest through its Eskay Creek mine now under construction. It also has a piece of the Snip gold mine in the Iskut Valley. ; ‘YOUR COLLEGE IN [ _YOUR COMMUNITY" ip A New Spirit of Giving BC Senior Games Winner Zone 10 - 400 Club Phyliss McRae Prince Rupert A McElhanney » Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Services for: &@ Roads and Bridges @ Resource Development m@ Land Development @ Feasibility and m Municipa!
