Rupert romp to rugby rout ~Northmen ~ gkunked Prince Rupert sent shock waves through the North Coast Rugby League May 15, unceremoniously - dumping the Terrace Northmen 17-0, -s=As the ecstatic rainbow warriors: floated off the field following the "final whistle, the Northmen were left to ponder what went wrong. Terrace’s David Hull had no excuses to offer. . “Prince Rupert just seemed to '-be-a-lot more fired up than the Northmen,’’ he said, adding “They rose to the occasion,” = It’s only the second time the -Northmen have been defeated in -the past three. seasons and this - time it was even on their home “Originally scheduled as a _ Rupert home game, it had to be ‘Moved here because of the appal- - _ ing condition of the coast team’s ‘field, “Although soundly thrashed in "each of their previous three mect- ’-ings this season, Prince Rupert made -it clear from the start they _would be na pushover this time. “In end-to-end first half play, both: ‘defences ensured the .) scoreboard . stayed empty until - late in the stanza. ‘Gathering in a Northmen 22m fe drop out, Rupert swept on to the attack culminating .with prop - Chris‘King going over for the try. ‘Charlie ‘Armstrong made good on the convert and the Northmen ‘were down 7-0. » That was not the first time this * season Terrace has given Rupert the eaily lead, but on this occa- sion the visitors did not stage the second half wilt which had cost them past games. . Hero of the day was Armstrong ~~ who sent a penalty through the _ uprights early in the second to make it 10-0, went in fora try off “a -linéout and: then converted again to provide 12 of Rupert’s 17 points. “With.the clock running down, ares the Northmen threw everything into ‘trying to break the shutout but were ‘unable to. pencirate a ; How co confident Rupert wall. McCleary ~ Threading a camel through the eye of a needle i is supposed to be tough. ‘For; ’-the Smithers, Camels, threading their way over the Ter- -race Northmen goal line is prov- ing downright impossible. - Shaking off the previous even- ings loss to Prince Rupert, Ter- ‘ace shut out their eastern rivals for the second straight weekend, “this time 23-0, -But that scoreline was as flatter- ing to the Northmen as it was un- fair to the Camels. - Twice close. to scoring’ tries themselves, the Smithereens “limited host Terrace to just two majors. ~The Camels also won their fair puts boot to Camels share of both scrums and lincouts, but were less effective in the loose and hampered by their backs’ inability to put together sustained attacks. ; For their parl, the Northmen had problems in the line as well, bobbled passes sewering several promising attacks. Although the game opened with heavy pressure from the visitors, Terrace inexorably. took control and, but for poor ball control, would have buried the Camels in the first 20 minutes of the match. As it was, it took a stunning penalty kick by Willle McCleary to break the deadiack. With the ball just inside the left sideline and no wind to help him, McCleary laid down a perfect boot to put Terrace ahead 3-0 after 29 minutes. The Camels came close with three minutes left in the half only to be denied by a desperate Gra- ham Bayles tackle. The Northmen were similarly kept out just 60 seconds later when specd merchant Amie Pel- letier was knocked into touch only five metres out. In a second half that belonged to the Northmén, MeCleary booted two more penalties and converted tries by Mark Pop- pelton and George Dacosta, McCleary now leads the Northmen’s production with 23 points. INTENSE. Terrace Northmen win — the lineaut (above) on the way to a shut out of the Smithers Camels. . At left, scrum half George DaCosta gets the ball away to the three quarter line despite to cloce attention of a determined dromedary. DaCosta went over for the Northmen’s second and final try in a 23-0. victory.
