We will have to do some rebuilding, some mending and some adjusting, but we are going to have a first class safety. program. Members of Safety Committees, Local Union Safety Directors, Local Safety Councils and the Regional Safety Director are all going to have to dig in harder than ever, and surely we recognize the hard work and effort that many active safety program members already perform. Now that Ihave the authority to call on officers of the Regional Safety Council and Local Union Safety Directors for help to cover investigations and inquests, more of my time can be devoted to co-ordinating and directing the Union’s safety program. We want to fill the crying need for expanding and im- — proving the safety education of those who are active in the promotion of safety, and to make possible the recruiting of many more active safety workers. Changing methods in our industry have increased the chances that new hazards will be created which will require new vigor in applying safety precautions if we are going to catch up. : Well, to wind up this session, may I urge the Local Unions to examine the idea of setting up active safety councils, as was recently done at Port Alberni, and for those Locals which don’t have Safety Directors or an Officer primarily respons- ible for pushing the safety program in the Local, I say, “How about it?” And finally, if you have some ideas on improving the safety program, drop a line to me.at 2859 Commercial Drive, Vancouver, B.C. In the mean- time, if you want help from me don’t hesitate to phone or write. MAX SALTER, Regional Safety Director SAFETY COUNCIL in session in the meeting room of Port Alberni’s headquarters.
