May 26th, 1975 /11. agreed with the intent of the motion, but took exception to the citing of one school alone, and he suggested that neighbouring School Boards be requested to implement the following points: 1. Students who spray-paint public buildings be held responsible for (a) cleaning or repainting, or (b) paying the costs therefore; 2. {ff no satisfactory restitution is arranged, graduation parties be disallowed by the Board and the offending school; 3. That a resolution to the L.M.M.A. be forwarded for consideration in coping with this public mischief and recommendation that the same be forwarded to the U.B.C.M. Alderman Thompson commented that it is not always students of the grad- uating class that do the spray~painting, and suggested that the Auxiliary Police Force be asked to be in complete attendance on graduating night. Alderman Traboulay suggested that a letter be written through the office of the Mayor to the Principal of PoCo Secondary School urging him to speak to the Students' Council and suggest that they make at least a partiai restitution for the actions of the students involved. Alderman Mabbett pointed out that not only public, but also private buildings in the City have been defaced by the act of spray-painting. Alderman Laking stated he had discussed the situation with Principal Gowans of PoCo Secondary School, and that he had informed him one year and four months ago a policy had been established whereby all acts of vandalism in the school must be paid for with funds from the Students' Council, which proved to be a very good deterrent, and he suggested that rather than go to the School Board first the Students' Council should be given a chance to try and rectify this matter. Alderman Ranger stated his concern that the Grade 11's may feel they have to outdo this year's class and as within a week or so Mary Hill Secondary and George Pearkes Secondary Schools will have their graduation he proposed that this week a meeting be held with the Student Councils and sponsors of the three Secondary schools; also the Principals and two School Trustees, and Inspector M.A. Young, i/c Coquitlam R.C.M.P. Detachment, to determine what action would be appropriate to take. Mayor Campbell stated he had endeavoured to set up such a meeting; however, he was advised that it would not be possible at this time.
