Fraser won't have ta give up any wood resulting. from the buyout of its Finnish » pariner’s share in Eurocan, The company, closed the deal last week giving Enso-Gutzeit Oy $95.8 million in cash and two million -West Fraser common ~ Shares in retum for the former’s 50 per cent stake in Eurocan. The sale involved not only mills but.2.2 million cubic metres of wood tenure in the northwest. West Fraser'had been worried that sincé the deal involved wood tenure, the provincial government would enact a take back provi- sion, . + That provision. requires licence holders {o.return five per cent.of the wood when’a licence, is sold or inewjed. The wood is then us forsmall business develop- ment.” ‘West Fraser would have lost 110,000 ‘cubic metres of wood a year had ‘the take back provision applied. ' The 2.2 million cubic metres is all intact,’’ West Fraser official Bruce MacNicol said last week. The company’s position was that the sale was a change in a partnership, not one company buying out another. ‘*It was deemed that the five per cent take back did not app- ly,’’ sald MacNicol. He added that West Fraser now » has more flexibility in deciding. where wood should go to be. pro- cessed. ‘*Otherwise, it would have been a bil of an undesirable situation,’ MacNichol continued. West Fraser is now the second largest lumber producer in Cana- da. _ It is the ‘sole owner. of the Eurocan pulp and paper mill in. Kitimat, Skeena Sawmills in Ter- race, North Coast Timber in Prince Rupert and Fraser Lake Sawmills. All those operations are now divisions of West Fraser Mills . Ltd. The deal also gives the compa- ny a50 Per cent stake in Houston Forest Products in Houston and about a third of Babine Forest Products in Bums Lake. — The purchase increases West Fraser’s lumber capacity by about 270-million board feet, bringing its total annual capacity te ap- proximately 1.3-billion board feet. That capacity makes it the sec- ond largest operation in the coun- try, the company says. And as for pulp production, the Eurocan purchase doubles West Fraser’s: annnal . production of linerboard and kraftpaper to a to- tal of about 450,000° metric tonnes. Under terms of the agreement, Enso-Gutzeit Oy will continue to market paper producis through its * worldwide market network and “ provide technical assistance at the Kitimat mill..The Hurécan corpo gate logo will remain at the mill. The sale was first announced . this spring with West Fraser offi- cials saying they preferred to buy out Enso than have that company sell to somebody else. »_ Goodyear Expensive? | | Get Over It OUR POPULAR ALL cae ay ARRIVA FUSS / OORT SUI BL ee | .
