Safeway outlined plans to purchase 132 feet. of

property west of Ottawa St. for expansion of its
Terrace store and parking lot. The plans included a
portion of the property Okanagan Skeena Group had
intended to use for a shopping centre a few years
earlier.

TWO YEARS AGO THIS WEEK... .
Five city representatives were in Victoria di scuss-
ing a second overpass with top Ministry of Highways:
officials. According to Mayor Jack Talstra the minis-
try made a commitment to conduct an overall study
on a new overpass. Previous studies had been carried
out by the city, but this was the first one by the
province... The city gave the first three readings to
five bylaw amendments which would raise rates for
garbage collection, water and sewer connection by
10%... The city.was continuing to investigate the
. possibility of restricting left-hand turns off Lakelse
‘Ave. onto Emerson St. Many details needed to be
‘worked out, - however, and a solution was not
expected for some months to come.

THREE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Superintendent of Public Works Stew Christen-
sen delivered a proposal for a new overpass over the

city to a task force on regional transportation needs.
‘The proposal pointed out the hazards and inad-

equacies of the Sande Overpass and suggested one at
Braun Street... Staff at Mills Memorial Hospital
blamed the Terrace Health Care Society for the:
decision of hospital admiriistrator Norm Carelius to
leave Terrace for a job in Victoria. Carelius declined ©

responsible for overseeing Mills. Memorial Hospital.

“Mount Layton Hot Springs received approval from

the Ministry of Crown Lands to develop 51.29 hec-
tares of land at the south end of Lakelse Lake. Hot

‘springs owner Bert Orleans had originally applied for: —

153 hectares in order to develop an 18-hole golf

FOUR YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
The Northwest Chapter of the Steelhead Society

of B.C. expressed concern to the Regional District of

Kitimat-Stikine about plans of Mount Layton Hot
Springs owner Bert Orleans to develop crown land
for a golf course on what they believed was a sensi-
tive fish habitat and spawning area... The. city
government was discussing the possibility of a
revitalization project for Kalum St. between Lakelse
and Greig avenues... The Chamber of Commerce
asked for the city’s support in a campaign to display
flags and banners along the eastern approach to city
during tourist season and special events.
