Few remember first
Provincial Premier

Most people respond with a
blank look when asked to name
the first Premier of British
Colurr'.ia,
Tr honour fell to John Fos-

ter .cCreight. He held the of-
fice for only thirteen months,
but he was responsible for the
transition from colonial to pro-
vincial status, although he had
ne previous experience in pub-
lic life.

At the time of his selection
he had never previously been
elected to public office of any
sort.

McCreight was a native of
Ireland having been born jin
1827 in County Tyrone.

1872 McCreight also ceased to
be Attorney General, but he.
continued as a private member
in the Legislature but did not
seek re-election in 1875,

In 1890 he was appointed to
the Supreme Court of British
