Few remember first Provincial Premier JOHN FOSTER McCREIGHT Most people respond with a blank look when asked to name the first Premier of British Colurr'.ia, Tr honour fell to John Fos- ter .cCreight. He held the of- fice for only thirteen months, but he was responsible for the transition from colonial to pro- vincial status, although he had ne previous experience in pub- lic life. At the time of his selection he had never previously been elected to public office of any sort. McCreight was a native of Ireland having been born jin 1827 in County Tyrone. ’ Shortly after ‘his call to the’ Trish bar In 1852 he emigrated to Australia where he Practiced law in Melbourne. In 1880 he arrived in Victor: ja and soon established a lucrative legal Practice, serving both the Island and mainland Columbia and served with ~dis- He took no active part in the political life of the colony but was known to be a supporter of Confederation with Canada and this coupled with his com. petency, presumably accounted for his selection by the Lieu: tenant Governor as Premier in- stead of the more colorful Amor de Cosmos. When the latter succeeded him. as Premier in December 1872 McCreight also ceased to be Attorney General, but he. continued as a private member in the Legislature but did not seek re-election in 1875, In 1890 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of British tinction on the bench until 1987.
