Bight hundred Hamilton workers in the Dominion Glass plant here have been on strike since June 17. Two other Dominion Glass factories, at Bramalea and Montreal, are also on strike. Local 203 President Don Gibson said the company would like, with the aid of the police, to provoke violence on the picket line in order to obtain an injunction restricting the number of pickets at each of the gates. The Dominion Glass Company in Hamilton is notorious for its anti-union attitude. It has long been known for its sweat shop conditions and low wages. Top wage for female workers is $2.52 an hour, with $2.90 the average wage for the men. Even if the workers win their full wage demand, it would only bring the male rate up to $3.65 and $3.20 for the women workers, in a two-year agreement. The striking glass workers are also fighting for a fully-paid pension plan, and complete coverage under their health and welfare plan. Stating that the morale of the membership is good, and that attempts by the press 1n Hamilton to paint a picture of disunity between leadership and membership were musrep- resentations, the Local 203 president said that, although there are differences of opinion at times, ““we nevertheless are united and determined to win this struggle.” ra I | F i DS oy ae : ; “home ‘pay They call it take-home PAY you can afford to go with ates Vol. 32, No. 29 7 7, if une By TOM McEWEN U.S. President Nixon’s “stunning surprise’ announce- ment on his visit to the Peoples Republic of China next year, possibly in May of ’72 — a trip described in Establishment news media as a ‘“‘journey for peace’’, opens. up a large ‘‘Pandora’s Box’’ of well- founded suspicions? - The major question on the lips of millions since Nixon made known his “‘journey for peace”’ to China is, — will the Nixon visit advance the cause of peace, or greatly escalate the danger of world conflict? From all past performances, now confirmed by publication of the Pentagon war conspiricies, this mission will be primarily that of fomenting hostility, violence and war, under the guise of seeking “‘peace”’. The normalization of relations between the U.S. and People’s China is, of course, an event to be highly welcomed. That however is marred by the fact that U.S. bombing and killing in Vietnam and other areas of Indo- china still continue unabated, as does Nixon’s rejection of any and every proposal for peace by representatives of the Vietna- mese people in Paris and elsewhere — even the growing demands for peace by the U.S. people themselves. This in addition to world-wide peace demands, that the U.S. get out of Vietnam NOW, and call a halt to its murderous aggression without further delay or procrastination. Hitherto U.S. long-range foreign policy in Indochina and Asia generally, has been to secure, via puppet govern- ments, coupled with aggression against the Asian peoples, to secure bases of operation, primarily against the Republic of-China— ‘‘the enemy’’. Thus in that context alone, Nixon’s “stunning” switch is highly suspect? Then there is the issue of Taiwan (Formosa) and its U.S. puppet Chiang Kia-shek, set up, financed and maintained by U.S. dollars and arms, specifically for the ‘‘invasion’’ (and recapture) of the Chinese main- land! Within the context of its switch in policy (if switch there be?), Chiang is slated for the garbage dump, and the island of Formosa itself a dumping ground for nuclear weapons, poison gasses, bacteriological weapons, etc., presently stored on the Japanese -Island of Okinawa, and which, the U.S. .must now move to a new locale. Who were these stockpiles of deadly weapons aimed against, if not the People’s Republic of China— “‘the enemy’’? The major question on the lips of millions since Nixon made known his ‘‘journey for peace”’ to China is— will the Nixon visit advance the cause of peace, or greatly escalate the danger of world conflict? From all past performances, now confirmed by publication of the Pentagon war conspiracies, this mission will be primarily that of fomenting hostility, violence and war, under the guise of seeking “Deace”’. There is also and not the least important, the well-founded suspicion that in Nixon’s “journey for peace’ to China, U.S. imperialism hopes to secure a war “‘ally’’ against the Soviet Union — a diabolical hope long nursed by U.S. imperialism and revealed by ex-president Truman at the beginning of World War II; viz, that they strive to steer Hitler against the Soviet Union, have these two powers ‘‘tear each other’s guts out, than we (the U.S. Britain and France, Ed.) step in and clean up on the remains.”’ History shattered that ‘‘hope’’, and left world imperialism reliant upon the Soviet Union for final victory over German fascism. Then there is the burning need of U.S. imperialism for a ‘‘face saver’’ to cover up the debacle it has suffered in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Probably Nixon hoped that that too may be found in his ‘‘journey for peace’’. But already the Vietnamese have made it known world-wide, that any “‘deals’’ Nixon may make in Peking won’t apply to the Viet- namese or halt their heroic struggle for independence and the right to run their own affairs. Lastly, but by no means least, is Nixon’s fate in next year’s presidential elections. As a pilgrim ‘‘journeying for peace”’ his chances would be greatly enhanced, but his ‘credibility gap’’, is much too wide, wider even since the publication of the Pentagon papers, and too odious to forget — even at the ballot box. And the people of China have a long acquaintance with foreign liars who come bearing “‘gifts’’ of a spurious “‘peace’’. See
