A16 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 11, 2000 Eye doc should know future of hospital surgery on Friday EYE SURGEON Dr. Ste- ven Shaver should know Friday if the tocal health council can provide en- ough money for surgeries to keep him in town. Two weeks ago Shaver told the Terrace Area Health Council he wanted another $101,000 on top of an existing budget of $72,750 for supplies for cataract surgeries at Mills Memorial Haspital. “If anything less is forthcoming, then I will seek a position outside this region,” he said in a letter to health council chief ex- ecutive officer Dieter Kuntz. This is Shaver’s second warning, that he'll leave if the eye surgery situation at Mills doesn’t improve. He arrived in July to re- place resident. ophthaima- logist Dr. Tom Nagy who went ta Edmonton for a year. Back in July both Nagy and Shaver were told that Mills wouldn’t exceed its cataract surgery supply budget for this year. At the current rate of use, it’l! be exhausted in December with three months still to go in the hospital’s fiscal year. Nagy has since backed up Shaver’s comments saying he doubts if he'll return himself unless there - is more money for surgery. . As it is, the health council months ago had asked the health ministry for an additional $184,000 for ophthalmology surgery ~ at Mills as part of its bud- get-request for this year. The health council now has its new budget and will be deciding tomorrow night how uny new money will be spent. The problem right now is that the hospital only gets about $40,000 a year for ophthalmology directly from. the provincial gov- ernment, says Kuntz. ‘But -it spent just over $220,000 on ophthalmo- logy -supplies . and. on wages for operating room nurses last year by topping up what was needed from the hospital’s general bud- get. Oo The health council’s ar- gument is that ophthalmo- logy is a regional service and so supporting it shouldn’t come from the. hospital’s own budget. “The $184,000 figure would mean we would be funded 100 per cent for ophthalmology at the cur- rent level,” said Kuntz. He said there are two parts to the health coun- cil’s eye surgery involving money — one is how much is needed to top up the ex- isting supplies budget until the end of the fiscal year and the second is how far the health council can go to meet Shaver's latest de- mand. But Kuntz warned thal increasing the eye surgery supplies budget wont ne- cessarily mean more operating room time for ophthalmology. There is only so much operating room time as it is and it has been spoken ‘for, he said. “If the ophthalmotogist were to get more, it would mean the other surgeons would have less,” said Kuntz. He did concede that for every new dollar the hos- pital can put towards oph- thalmology, a dollar would be freed up to be spent elsewhere, But that doesn’t mean these dollars could be used for more opertaing room time, “The operating rooms are at full tilt so this would mean extendend hours and this would mean negatia- ting with the staff and the unions,” said Kuntz. “We don't have the [operating room] nurses for © this,” he said in adding that. existing nurses wouldn’t be in favour of - working over time con- stantly. ZEB HES The health council here Dr. Steven Shaver also wants to meel a sec- ond goal of Shaver and Nagy — finding the money and resources for a second ophthalmologist for the re- gion, This goal is part of the recently completed north- wesl medical services blueprint, Accomplishing this will require the cooperation of all of the health councils in the northwest.
