TIME IS running out for conservation officers want- ing to power up an elec- trified fence al the landfill in New Aiyansh, as discus- sions between the Nisga’a and government officials have stalled. : The fence was put in last fall as part of a province- wide initiative by the en- Viroument ministry to pro- vide bear-proofing al all solid waste facilities within the next two years. It hasn’t been turned on yet because conservation of- ficers must first deal with the many bears who visit the dump, and getting to that stage is proving to be an ex- ercise in frustration for both conservation officers and the fence will be powered Up is anybedy’s guess. lion,’? says conservation of- ficer Ken Fujino. “Nobody's been able to give us an answer.’’ The problem is that before any bears get relocated or the fence gels turned on, there must first be a man- agement program worked out between the ministry and the Nisga’a. And that has proven problematic. “We're still negotiating with the Nisga’a,” says Jim Hofweber, municipal en- ministry officials. Just when” “That’s the $64,000 ques- ‘could vironmental protection head for the region. “‘We haven’t had a positive response from them as far as maintaining” the landfill site goes. It’s been very frustrating for us.” Hofweber says that there is no mecting date set for them to sit down again to discuss the issue with the Nisga’a, but he feels there will be enough time to get the fence powered up this year, “There's still enough time,”’ he says, ‘‘But just.” Ken Fujino is not that op- timistic. ‘‘The odds aren’t good,”’ he says. ‘“We would like to get this over with this year, but nobody's keeping .us informed. July and Au- gust would have been the _ best, times to gel L the bears, “and those’ times “are almost up. Ltd Fujino explains that once a Management plan has been established, it would only take a couple of days to get their bear traps and equip- ment in place. Then they Start = relocating animals, including the nine grizzlies that he estimates frequent the dump. The problem, according to Fujino, is that once the sal- mon start spawning in the crecks, lots of bears will leave the dump to feast on Piano Comprehensive adults 0 or chi Instruction -— SYIVANA BROMAN | iano studies: for beginners lbren) lo Grade 7 Reyal 4 er — Rink “doors at READY AND waiting for an agreement between their ministry and the Nisga’a are conservation officers such as James Hilgemann, An electric fence around the New Aiyansh dump in the Nass Valley has yet to be turned on. But that can't happen until bears in the area are trapped and relocated, Electric dump fence stalled up in the Nass the fish. “That means less bears get relocated,’ Fujino says, “Which means more bears returning to the dump next spring.’’ Meanwhile, Sam Munroe fromthe Aiyansh band of- fice says that things simply haven’t come together yet between his office and the ministry. “We have to sit down again with the environment people in Smithers and talk about it,” he says, “Depending on how quick- ly we get together, the fence may or may not happen un- ti] next year,”’ Munroe is skeptical of the fence’s ulility at any rate.
