During the first four months of this year, Sweeting has handled a - total of 63 complaints, 34 of which came from the general public and the balance being violations she discovered while on her appointed rounds. ‘The city’s Nuisance Bylaw was the source of the majority of complaints. According to Sweet- ing, 43 of her files related to this bylaw and enforcement has resulted in the removal of a number of decaying fences and derelict vehicles — 15 vehicles in ‘one case alone — the demolition of unused or dangerous homes, garages and sheds, and the removal - of commercial .and residential . _ garbage and assorted junk as well as the removal of a few tree stumps. Of the other 20 complaints, 17 related to the Street and Traffic Bylaw, two to the Noise Bylaw and one undisclosed incident was listed as miscellaneous. There were no reporied complaints stemming from the city’s No Smoking Bylaw. Council is now awaiting | another report from Sweeting. In a summary of the group’s efforts to date, coordinators note that the students hand- lettered their slogan ‘‘When drinking, don’t drive’’ on 2,000 checkstand bags used by the local liquor store over the Christmas season and also made visits to elementary schools us- ing the same theme. During the previous fall 11 members of the group attended a conference in Smithers. The students distributed 200 ICBC CounterAttack plastic in- car.trash bags filled with infor- mational literature to homes in Thornhill, and some members accompanied RCMP on road blocks during the spring CounterAttack campaign to hand out information to motorists. The Thornhill group also made sober driving the theme of the school’s spring drama pro- duction, the students have taped a radio play on the same subject for broadcast to the community next year, and films on the dangers of alcohol abuse have been incorporated into the 1 Counterattack Club Tax break Area property owners outside the municipality of Terrace get a one- week break from the normal prop- erty tax payment deadline this year.
