This Way Out by Shella Radley Adult: fiction published by Charles Scribner's Sons Derek and. Christine Cartwright live in the quiet Suffolk village of Wyveling. Their three children are grown, and their youngest daughter, Laurie, has recently. died of complications of Down’ $ Syndrome. — Derek and Christine are now free of responsibility for the first time in years. They can travel, do whatever they want with the rest of their fives. _ But when Christine’s mother, Enid Long, is in a car accident . that leaves her badly. shaken and: unable to cope, they invite her ~ to stay with them. After all, it’s only temporary. It’s not like Enid is moving in for keeps. _. . But Enid doesn’t seem too keen on leaving. Derek really likes the ‘old lady, but he hadn’t counted on having her as a permanent — houseguest. Pretty soon Derek begins having nightmares. He awakens each | night in a cold sweat, the memory of; his hands around Enid’s . throat terrifyingly vivid. What would his wife think if she knew of his dreams? He’s sure the nightmares would stop if he could just get Enid to move out. But Christine insists that her mother be allowed to remain for as long as she wants. Derek is confused. Christine and Enid don’t get along at all. _ They are about as compatible as two junkyard dogs fighting over the same bone. So why is Christine so determined to make Enid a permanent member of the household? One thing is for certain though; Derek knows he has to get Enid out of the household. Never in a million years would he ac- tually consider murdering his mother-in-law, but those nightmares are eating away at his nerves. Then.a total stranger confronts him with a highly unusual pro- position. It’s so ridiculous as to be almost funny. Except murder is never amusing. I thought his story was a little slow to get out of the starting gate, but once it got up some steam it was hard to put it down. I .will politely refrain from making any comments regarding the mother-in-law cliche. Walkers by Graham Masterton _ Adult fiction published by Tor Horror | _ When Jack Reed first stumbled across the huge building buried - deep in the Wisconsin woods, he was instantly captivated: The building looked like a castle or a grand hotel from another era. Jack envisioned it as an exclusive resort hotel. It was obvious . that it would take millions to bring it up to present standards, but there-would be nothing else like it in the entire midwest. - It didn’t bother him, not really, that The Oaks had once been - an infamous asylum for the criminally insane. What did bother | him- however were the odd noises that seemed to radiate out from — ‘the brick walls. But surely it was nothing more threatening than rats or squirrels. Jack wanted-this building more than anything he’d ever wanted in his whole life. It was his chance to.grab at the brass ring. He doesn’t care that. The Oaks has a sordid past. So what if the 165 inmates mysteriously disappeared in one single night, never to be seen again. Who in his right mind would actually believe they had simply vanished into thin air! Jack Reed isn’t interested in ancient history. No half-baked story is going to stand in the way of his dreams. Too bad Jack — can’t tell the difference between dreams and nightmares. Mistakes _ like.that can.be deadly. . "This is one.of those.book that kirid of makes | you ‘wonder if” maybe it’s time to switch to something safe, like romance novels. At least you wouldn't be looking. under the bed overy night. Or in the closet.
