Everyone in the University
community agrees that the orig-
inal Templeton incident was a
false issue. The real issue has
become the monopoly structure of

~ the University itself, The key

question in this regard is the
demand of the faculty that all of
its members must have the right™
to perform their teaching func-
tions free from the fear of dis-
missal for any cause other than
academic,

The faculty has prepared a”
brief on this subject which is the
best in North America, It con-
tains the provision that only a
meeting of a committee of the
faculty itself can make the
decision for dismissal. The
Board of Governors has had this
brief in their possession since
September but has refused to
act on it,

The next step in the life of the
University is to win acceptance
of the Faculty’s brief on acad-
emic freedom and tenure (job
security), All other issues ulti-
mately depend on it, From this
the question of elected faculty
and student representation onthe
Board could follow. Already the
incident of the teaching assis-
tants has resulted in some break-
through on this matter, Student
Council President Wong was
allowed to accompany the five be-
fore the Board as was Vancouver
alderman Harry Rankin.

The Board, sensing that its
arbitrary powers have been
somewhat dented, are trying to
split the progressive forces.
Their action in refusing to allow
Professor Bottomore to withdraw
his resignation as Dean of Arts
and the appointment of a new
interim Dean shows that they are
still trying to exclude the acad-
emic community from basic de-
cision-making,

It is now up to the faculty
itself to put forward a program
that will unite its ranks, keeping
in mind the main goal — the
securing of academic freedom
and tenure. The events of
the past week have shown that
they can count on the considerable
and responsible support of the
students,

Over two thousand Simon Fraser University students, teaching assistants and faculty gather in
the main mall, henceforth to be known as ‘‘Freedom Square."’ They came to voice their support
for Students Council decision to boycott classes

We believe that the events of
the past week in the final an-
alysis are part of the struggle
against monopoly, a struggle
which today involves workers,
farmers, professionals, intellec-
tuals and some sections of busi-
ness itself,

The control of the university
by monopoly, the perversion of
the institution into simply an-
other big business enterprise,
has been strongly and success-
fully challenged.

We see the struggle against
monopoly as part of a vast social
transformation taking place
throughout the world, the pro-
cess. of the passing away of an
old system andits replacement by
a new one — socialism, We are

confident that the struggle against
monopoly, for the extension of
democracy, will in due course
result in the establishment of
socialism in Canada.

Socialism means the public
ownership and management ofall
the main means of production, the
banks and credit system, and the
transportation and communica-
tion systems, It will mean that
every individual will have equal
opportunity for a good education
so that he or she can develop and
fully realize their capabilities in
‘a world at peace,

We welcome the initial vic-
tories won at Simon Fraser, The
spirit of challenge, of democracy
is in the air. This is a.mar-
vellous spirit, but in our opinion

spirit alone is not enough, science
is also required, the science of
Marxism-Leninism,

We do not believe that the en-
emies of progress are “paper-
tigers,” They ARE powerful,
they have many resources at their
commmand, To defeat them itis
often-times necessary to unite
the greatest number of people on
the basis of action which falls
short of the final solution of
socialism,

The victory that was achieved
in defence of academic freedom
can lead only to new and more
significant victories. The kind
of unity that was~displayed at
Simon Fraser will be necessary
at many new stages in the trans-
ition to socialism, that lies ahead,
