A12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 3, 2002 MP satisfied with new boss SKEENA ALLIANCE MP Andy Burton says he’s happy Stephen Harper was elected as his party’s new leader as - it now means it can move forward. “Excellent choice. I strongly believe he was the right choice,” said Burton of Harper’s election through a mail- in ballot March 20. - “We can put all of this behind us and move on to build the party as a viable governing alternative to the. Liberals,” Burton continued, Burton, who supported Harper, said the Alliance has been through a difficult time with internal disruptions stemming from opposition to the former leader, Stock- well Day. ; ves a Harper defeated three challengers, including Day, who was first elected leader in 2000 leading into the federal election of that year. Day then came under intense criticism for his leader- ship style and decision-making. It ultimately lead to a number of Alliance MPs leav- ing its caucus to form a partnership with the federal Pro- gressive Conservatives. Burton himself was suspended, but returned to the Al- liance caucus after a two-month absence. Day resigned as leader late last year, paving the way for the mail-in leadership ballot. Harper served as a Reform MP between 1993 and 1997, leaving to become head of the National Citizens’ Coalition. Burton expects Harper to make inroads in central and Stephen Harper Andy Burton eastern Canada, regions in which first the Reform party and then the Alliance have so far failed to penetrate suf- ficiently in terms of electing MPs. “Stephen Harper was born and raised in Toronto and I’m sure that will help,” said Burton. While Harper is now leader of the Alliance, he isn’t yet the Official Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons, That will happen after Harper runs and is elected to Parliament. A number of seats are open, including the one vaca- ted in Calgary when Preston Manning retired earlier this year, but a candidate has already been selected there. Harper received 53 per cent of the 88,526 votes cast by mail. His closest challenger, Day, received 37 per cent of the voles. Band plans major projects THE KITSELAS band expects to break ground on two construction projects this year worth $2.3 million. The biggest one is a planned a $1.3 million health centre at its Gitaus subdivision just past Kleanza Creek. Health Canada has agreed in principle ta put about $800,000 toward the project, said Kitselas chief council- lor Glenn Bennett. A further $220,000 is to come from the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, with the band picking up about $300,000. Bennett said the centre would house health admin- istrative offices for the band now located at the Queens- way band office. Extra space may be leased out to defray some con- struction costs, he said, adding the band expects that to finance its $300,000 share of the cost. r Dr, PA, Okimi | : General Denlieiry, Full Face Orthodontics, TN os 200-4619 Park Ave Office Hours Terrace, B.C, V8G 1Y5 | Mon - Thurs 8:00 a.m, - 4:30 p.m, (250) 635-7611 ; V Mackay’s Funeral Service Ltd. - Serving Terrace, Kitimat, Smithers & Prince Rupert Monuments Concerned personal Bronze Plaques service in the Northwest Terrace Crematorium * since 1946 4626 Davis Street Terrace, B,C. Also among band plans is a $1 million-plus project to connect band houses in the Kulspai subdivision off Queensway Drive to the Queensway-Churchil! Drive sewer system. Bennett said it’s a high priority for the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs because the band’s homes all use septic fields and could be contaminating the Skeena River. . “They're going to pay for 100 per cent of it,” he said. Contracts haven’t yet been awarded for either project. Bennett said the band is also waiting to hear about possible money for construction of new houses at the Gi- taus subdivision. \ You are invited to come to the movies Friday, April 5° at 7 p.m, at the Terrace Pentecostal Assembly Admission is FREE and a kids program is available for 1-7 year olds. 4 Join us for gene. | a | the World mi: Wide Pictures § production of & “The Climb” eS AR PR ! d 4) featuring b 3| Jason : [4 George and : Ned Va The deadline for advertising in the Kitimat/Terrace SUPERPAGES™ is April 19, 2002.
