City council had received a suggestion from its Parks and Recreation Advisory Council that the name be Kermodei Bear Park. Staff had suggested any name involving “millennium” should be avoided as it will end up sounding too trite. Council decided last week a contest open to both school students and the general public should be conducted to find a name for the new park. “We hope the names proposed will reflect some- thing about the area or the specific site,” said parks superintendent Steve Scott. The deadline for proposed names wiil be April 28, he said, Check those decks SENIOR city building inspector Paul Gipps is warning people to check their decks for rot and de- terioration after one collapsed last week. He said it was the second time he’s seen a deck collapse in recent months in which the supporting beams had rotten right through. People on the deck were injured when the struc- ture collapsed and fell about eight feet. “People should be checking all wood that’s out- side exposed to the weather on an ongoing basis,” Gipps said. El cheater convicted A HAZELTONS resident has been given a six month conditional sentence, 40 days of community service and has been ordered to pay back what she defrauded from the federal employment insurance program. - Cynthia Robinson of the Hazeltons pleaded guil- ty in court March 8 for collecting $12,390 in em- ployment insurance benefits at the same time as she earned $21,997 as a social worker for the children and families ministry. , The offence took place between June 1, 1998 and Jan. 15, 1999, Provincial court judge Ed de Walle ordered Ro- binson to repay the monies within three years. The repayment period is significant, said em- ployment insurance investigator Vince Heslenfeld, because, it now becomes part of the condition of the sentence... “This was a well-planned fraud,” said Heslenfeld in noting that Robinson filed 18 false employment insurance reports during the time she was working for the children and families ministry. In some circumstances, employment insurance officials can levy fines af 100 per cent or more, but this was a serious enough case to justify court pro- ceedings, he said. Heslenfeld said Robinson was discovered to be collecting employment insurance while working as a resull of a computer matching program. “We have a number of ways of making sure people collect anly when they are supposed to,” he said.
