bag A AG — Terrace § Sunda, Wednesday, April 4, 1990 ETTERS TO THE TERRACE STANDARD Dear Sir: I support condom dispensers in school washrooms. I do this not because I wish to encourage teenagers to become sexually active but because 1 see the end result of their sexual ac- tivity. Already in our town we have teenagers who are positive for the HIV virus. Condom dispensers in the schools will not cause those children whose moral backgrounds frown on sex to suddenly start indulging. Un- fortunately, condom dispensers. will not cause those reckless teenagers, who don’t care to start using pro- tection. The only péople it. will reach are the group. who are responsible but terribly em- barassed and unwilling to go to a more public place to buy their contraceptives, i.e, a drug ‘store. However, if in the latter group we can save on@or two people it would be worth the cost, as the cost of HIV in- fection will become .. usage. However, while it is. astronomical, I thoroughly agree that the a school should take on a -* strong role in education of | - HIV transmission and of the | risks and failures of condom all very well and good to tell ‘children what they should or shouldn't do, ultimately they will make _that.. decision | themselves and it is best that they are prepared. with as -much knowledge as possible. . cae Yours sincerely, Lani Almas, M.D. Terrace, B.C, Wood comments criticized - ie i time fo put a few things siralght. If Westar management pettonnel are going to point fingers at the people logging im the North Kelum- Meziadin area, they should at least use facts and figures that show what Is really hap- pening there and not quote teformation that will pur- posely mislead the public. Westar Timber manage- ment continually states that 1.3 milion cubic metres of - wood is being exported an- . eually through Stewart from the North Kalum-Mezladin area, This is absolutely not _ tree and they know that. from AS The 1.3 million is the allowable yearly cut, but the majority of the wood is low - grade hemlock pulp that goes to pulp mills along the B.C.. coast. Only 15 to 20 per cent of the 1.3 million cubic metres is being exported and no magic formula can change those figures, Rotten wood is rotten wood. The wood that is in ques- tion was once part of Westar's TFL and they choose a few years ago to downsize thelr TFL and get rid of a problem they didn’t want to deal with by return- Ing their decadent timber to the province. Don't judge our am afraid 1 know only too well from my training as a childbirth educator that this is asking something that is completely unrealistic. And I love each of them too much to deny them information about and access to condoms simply because I have some _ paranoid ‘fear ‘that if they see |. a condom. machine ‘they will - ' immediately leap at the next available person and have unbridled sex. Information is what everyone needs about AIDS, not punishment. by death because one made a mistake and had sex. And let’s not kid ourselves _ ‘marriage is no guarantee you won’t get AIDS; your: new spouse could have had Now that some hardwork- ing individuals have found a way to move this decadent timber to market, Westar Timber feels it is now entitled to the few good sawlogs created from these opera- tions. Weil those of us working with the wood know that it is still very true and it is an ongoing struggle to make a go of this type of timber. We know and accept the conditions we have to deal with, Why can’t Westar Timber do the same, Brian (Tipper) Mould Mezladin Lake, B.C. . teens an unfortunate encounter years earlier which: might — result in you and possibly your unborn chilren contrac- ting AIDS. I trust the school board 88 will choose to support our teens, not judge them.
