Olympic swimmer _stops in Terrace “Mark ‘Tewksbury, one of a handful of Canadian athletes managing to come home with a medal from last year’s Seoul Olympics, spent April 22 weekend as a guest of the Ter- race Bluebacks Swim Club where he gave lectures and swimming demonstrations to the youngsters. Tewksbury, who Picked up a silver medal in the men’s four- by-100 meter medley relay event at Seoul, was here at the club’s invitation, mainly to inspire club swimmers. At the pool he also swam an invitational 100-meter backstroke (his specialty) to seta pool record. And, in another ex- hibition event, he went against the club’s best back, breast, but- terfly and freestyle swimmers by swimming all the strokes himself in a 4x100 medley relay. Tewksbury is a 21-year-old student at Calgary University, where he majors in political science when not winning. medals around the world. His latest accomplishment was earlier this..year when he won four gold: medals at the world cup championships in Sweden and. A year earlier at the Common- wealth Games, he won two gold medals, Right now, his only regret is he lost the Canadian backstroke record a short time Slo-pitch starts up Eleven teams are signed up to compete in the first annual season of the Terrace mixed slo- pitch softball league. League play got underway .Monday. They'll be using three ‘fields on a Monday-to-Thursday ‘night basis. A spokesman told us the schedule will be continuous through May and June, then slack off slightly during the sum- mer holiday period. Fields in use are the regional district park in Thornhill, Thornhill Primary School field, and Skeena Sawmills field. Some of the league rules are as - follows: _»@ Teams field six men and four women. Teams with five men and five women are encouraged to go five-and-five. @ No base stealing. @ Five run limit per inning — seventh inning open. Teams entered . are Skeena ' Cellulose, . Royals, River Rats, Terrace. Hotel ‘Athletics, Family Connection, Skeena Sawmills, indeperident. Industrial Supplies, Realty World, Brewmasters, Skeena Hotel and All: ago. He's working hard at re- trieving the mark.; As for his future? “Pm sort of taking things | year-by-year. My life was fo- cused so long on the Olympic Games that I’m not ready to make that commitment again right now,” he told us between lectures. “Soon Vl get my goals set - again and figure out where I want to go.’? He didn’t count out an appearance at the next games in 1992.. “We'll see,” he said, uncommitted. When we suggested swimming is noted as-a sport with early retirement, Mark objected to this theory. “JT beg to differ, * he said. “It’s simply not true anymore. Perhaps at ope point it was, but certainly not now in world swim- ming. It’s becoming an older sport.” When asked how to keep the interest up in youngsters because it’s a mind and body-sapping sport, Mark told,us he kept his interest up by having fun at training in the off moments. “T like the competition and ‘the travel, and I like the goals and discipline. it was teaching you really can get into it and eliminate any difficulties.” We also asked Tewksbury to give his opinion about the pro- ‘gram of swimming in Canada right now. Is it improving or go- ing downhill? ‘We had zero retirements after the Seoul Olympics, so I think ‘we’re going to continue with a good team. They’re re- evaluating what went wrong in Korea, and I think it’s going to make some leaps and bounds — we're definitely on the way up.” Mark was quite open when we brought up the question of drugs. We suggested that swimming was a sport that appeared to be relatively untouched by drugs. “I wouldn’t say untouched, but I would way it’s not any- where near the level that track and field is. . ‘What goes on the eastern bloc countries I don’t know. A few years back there was one Canadian swimmer (unnamed) who tested positive for steroids, but swimming has. been drug -— tested in Canada since 1982. “*it means we wouldn’t have | that problem where Ben (Johnson) was caught abroad. As a Candian swimmer, you have to give a urine test before, you get on the plane to a meet. I think that’s the way to do it, In fact, all the programs are doing that now on a national level.” When asked if he thought the drug problem would ever go away, he told us this. “T don’t know. | hope it will,- but there seems to be ways right — now to beat the drug-testing sys- ~ tem, I think that until they bring’ 1 blood-testing into it, they really. : can't expect j it to o disappear.” TinRAce YOUTH socerr ASSOCIATION: oe GAMES SCHEDULE — MAY 6 — AUGUST 26, 1909 DIVISION 10 — U-8 — LENGTH OF PLAY 2x25 minutes : E.T.
