laid against local — residents TERRACE — A number of local residents have been charged with con- spiracy to traffic co- caine. by Sherry Halfyard A five-month in- vestigation by Terrace police, assisted by Prince Rupert RCMP, led to the arrest Friday, April 11 of eight individuals, with warrants outstanding for two others. The investigation cen- tered on the distribution of $23,000 worth of co- caine in the Terrace area. Eight local residents appeared in Terrace Pro- vincial Court at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April I1 to hear bail requirements for charges that were laid earlier in the day. Daniel Belanger, 24, Bruno Belanger, 30, Kenny Belanger, 22, Re- no Belanger, 23, Cordula Pitzoff, 20, Darren Munson, 20 and Jose- phine Hummel, 31, were charged with conspiracy to traffic in cocaine. Kenneth Belanger and Cordula Pitzoff face an additional charge of pos- session of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. The RCMP investiga- tion also led to the arrest of Darren Munson and Wanda Watson. They were charged with con- spiracy to traffic in hashish. Although charges have been laid, it does not mean any of these in- dividuals are guilty of alleged offences. All the alleged drug traffickers who appeared in Terrace Provincial Court Friday, April 11, were released on their own recognizance, with bail set at $1,500 against any breach of recognizance conditions. The charged individ- uals have been ordered -to appear in court Fri- day, May 16 where the method of trial will be determined and a pre- liminary hearing date will be set. First Baby After 30 Although older mothers are ’ more subject to obstetrical com- plications, a healthy woman over the age of 30 expecting her first child can be reasonably confident of a favorable outcome for her- self and her child, according to Bruce Harris, MD who discussed “The First Baby After 30" with family physicians attending the annual meeting of the American Academy of Family Physicians meeting recently in Kansas City. Dr. Harris outlined complica- tions associated with oldermoth- ers which include increases in mis- carriages, in infant mortality, rate of cesarean deliveries and mul- tiple pregnancies. Litter lines some ditches A major cleanup program for Terrace has been proposed to local aldermen by a newly formed committee. The ‘Clean Up Terrace’ program will involve placement of trash recep- tacles on major streets, distribution of car litter bags, and efforts to heighten community awareness of the problem. He assured trustees that all pro- posals in the application fall within eligibility guidelines for the Ex- cellence fund. The monies would be used to cover the cost of staff salary increment increases and grid increases for the period of January 1985 to June 1986.
