as a patriotic act to help
fight separatism. The
result is. a poor lecture
and a worse novel.

The story shows how
Pierre and Giselle, two
young Quebecers, are led
to disaster afler joining a
separatist group which
attempts to take over the
province by violence.

Phillips’ characters are
a collection of
stereotypes. Cliches and
triteness abound.

Events are
dramatized and
foreshadowing is -used
with all the subtlety of the
fiveo'clock whistle.
