Bl4- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 24, 2000 Oil and transmission fluid drive Mothers Day races at Speedway SUNTAN oil wasn’t the only oil greasing the track during The Terrace Speedway Association’s inaugural race day May 14, At least two. cars blew motors during their races, spilling oi! around the track. The sweeping crew did their best to clean it up but racing on oil is almost as slippery as driving-on ice. As a result, some of the faces were more. entertain- ing than planned as drivers had difficulty keeping their _ cars focussed on the track. Still, old and returning racers including Gary Mac- Carthy in hobby car 92, who was back after taking a couple years off from ra- cing, managed great come- backs. MacCarthy. had some transmission problems dur- ing hotlapping but’ fixed them in time to take the checkered flag in all three of the A Hobby races, The 13 Hobby car, dri- ven by Dave Horsfield and Bob Barnett, blew an en- gine in the B Hobby Heat. . Then, not five minutes later, Bob’s wife won the 50/50 draw in the stands, Street car 181, driven by Christine Miner in the B . Street -class, poured more transmission fluid all aver the track and was forced to quit the heat early, But that didn’t stop this racing team from doing well. They worked: fast and furiously to repair the car in time for the next race. . Lyle Miner ended up do- minating the A Street class by sweeping first placein all three of his races in this car. There was a lower num- ber of cars on Mather’s Day but this is not unusual for @ Hopping hurdles Terrace and Kitimat high schoo! students compe- ted in Smithers at a zone track and field meet Saturday, May 13.
