And at the BC Seniors Games in Port Alberni Aug. 26-29, they’re doing more than that ~- they’re winning, In swimming, Renate Davis placed sec- ond in women’s 25 and 100 metre breast- stroke in the 60-64 age group. And Betty Clent placed second in the novice women’s 25 metre breaststroke in the same age category. Swimmer, Joe Mandur placed first in the 100 and 400 metre freestyle and breastsiroke and second in the 200 metre freestyle in the men’s 60-64 age group, But tack competitors struck gold with Patricia Kirkaldy hurling the shot put 7.88 metres for first but Alic Toop gave her strong competition by coming in second. She threw the shot put 6.63 metres. Both Seniors sweep swimming, track at Alberni games Kirkaldy and Toop competed in the women’s 60-64 age group. Kirkaldy went on to win the women’s javelin by throwing the javelin 17.45 metres, And Toop placed first in the long jump flying 3.88 metres. William Lecleir took home silver in the men's javelin 70-74 age group lobbying the javelin 23.59 metres. In long jump, Ester Postuk won 2.3 metres, threw the shot put 6.34 metres and the javelin 14.58 metres for three gold medals in the women’s 70-74 age group. Maxine Smallwood won gold in the women’s 5000 metre walk 65-69 age group. Terrace’s medal count as of Friday, Aug. 28: nine gold, seven silver and four bronze. Winter fun ahead NOT SURE? Choose between ei- ther the Nancy Green or Alpine Program depending on the age of your kids. If they’re under 12 and older than six, Nancy Green may be just their thing. Kids must be tall enough to ride lifis and lessons take place from 12-3 on Sundays, starting the first Sunday after Boxing Day. The program ends in March. For $50 kids have fun, learn ski safety and etiquette all season while develaping their skilis on a variety of terrain including bumps, powder and groomed runs. One race, usually in Smithers in February is included. Older Alpine club members (12-18 years old) will leam racing skills in this Canada- wide racing program. Teens compete in four zone races across the northwest and train Saturdays, Sundays, and school holidays, All coaches are certified and last year’s cost was $220. Kids can cut down on equipment costs by heading to Shame’s ski swap in October. All students will need to purchase their own helmets and ski passes. Gymnastics The Terrace Peaks gymnastics club wel- comes new members to their recreational and competitive teams. “There’s no age limit,” sald Lori Schul- meister a team supporter who has scem everyone from moms and tots to teens and special needs kids participate in the recrea- tional team. The program offers a variety of fun learn- ing opportunities and fees start at $88 for 16 sessions for recreational gymnasts. The season for competitive gymnasts Staris the second week of September while the recreational Ieague begins September 19 at Thornhill school.
