B14 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 28, 1997 Bluebacks smash old pool records at Panhandier meet THE BLUEBACKS broke three pool records and qualified a number of swim- mers for the provincial finals at the 10th annual Panhandle Invitational two weeks ago. Not bad for a club that hasn’t won a swim. meet yet this year. moe “We don’t concern our- selves with the overall team performance too much,” says coach Mike Carlyle. “We focus on the relays and let the individual per- formances speak for them- selves.” Those performances spoke out loud and clear at the Panhandler in Prince Rupert. Jenine Barton made waves with tvo pool records — one in the 800 free, and the other in the 200 fly. “Her 200 butterfly time was really unexpected,” says Carlyle, “‘It was only the second time she’s raced the 200. At the Tezrace meet in April, she did it in 3:13 and in she managed to take 25 seconds off that in Rupert, which was great. The butterfly is a very im- pressive event to watch. It’s really exciting." Marina Checkley, 15, also broke a pool record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 28.66 seconds. ‘It was nice to see,’’ says Carlyle. ‘‘That's her first time this year under 29 sec- onds and it’s a nice way for her to lead into the provin- cials.”’ Other swimmers who did especially well at the event included 11-year-old Thomas Demetzer, 10-year- old Petra Robertson, and 10- |: year-old Scott Vanderlec. Anna Farrell also did well, finishing third in her group and picking up her first Skaters pass challenging SEVERAL TERRACE Skating Club members real- ly impressed both judges and spectators at the High Test event in Kitimat, April 19, and passed their ex- tremely difficult silver and gold tests. Daniel Miller and Deana Lambright passed their sil- ver tests, while Aina Carlson, Grace Mitchell, Leanne Ballinger and Kendra Eys all passed their gold tests. Eys performed an ex- quisite solo for her Gold Artistic Test. Skating to a number choreographed al- most entirely by herself, Eys’ artistry, expression and grace combined to earn high praise from all three judges. Eys is just the third mem- ber in the club’s 25 year his- tory to pass the test. The last was Jenifer Kuehne in 1995, Grace Mitchell earned her Gold Dance Feet at the event by passing her West- minster and Quickstep tests — the last in a series of 21 dance tests that lead to the Gold level, She is the fifth skater from the club to com- plete all 21 dances. All four of the previous skaters to have completed Gold — including Donna Emery, Shelley Lefebvre, Jessica Lambright and Nicole Page, went on to teach at the former Terrace Figure Skating Club, Emery’s mother, Monica Lessard, has judged skating for 20 years was one of the founding memi-ers of the club back in 1972. Lessard is the only original member still with the club. She even has grandchildren skating in it. For her dedication, Les- sard was awarded a 25-year pin in Vancouver on May 3. Lefebvre was the second member to get her gold fect, in 1989. She has since gone on to pass her Gold Frees- kate and competed provin- cially before helping to coach the club, Lambright picked up her Gold Dance Feet in 1990 and went on to dance pairs for nearly three years. She also gained her gold Artistic and Gold Freeskate tefore coaching professionally with the club for two sea- sons. Page also got the Gold Dance Feet in 1990. She has been coaching at the club for the past two years. For seniors in the north- west, taking tests usually means travelling to Prince George. The many journeys and Jong travel hours neces- sary are due to a lack of Jo- cal ice time, and it makes for additional stress at the tests for both athletes and volunteer judges.
