There’ll be an economic devel- opment officer in Smithers, Burns Lake, Stewart and two in Prince Rupert; economic development minister Dave Zirmhelt announc- ed last week. Four | people, including 4 regional director, will be based. at the ministry’s regional office in Terrace. And a regional manager who will oversee the development of- ficers will be based in Kitimat. He'll also be responsible for de- velopment issues in Terrace and in Kitimat, The development officers will puide projects through the provin- cial government in co-operation es ee ane Dave Zirnhelt with focal and businesses. First word of the plan came last ycar when the government said it wanted to reduce the size of the agencies ministry in Victoria and spread those positions around the pro- vince, The ministry now has two people in the northwest — one in Terrace and one in Smithers. The regional director will also be responsible for government agent offices throughout the northwest. “What we're doing i is reducing the bureaucracy and tripling the field staff,” said Zimbelt in making the announcement. “There'll be some $500,000 of savings in the bureaucracy.’’ Two people have already been named to the new positions.
