First Nations culture has been embraced

by the Festival since it began ten years ago.

This year, Festival-goers can experience

the history and contribution of Canada’s

indigenous people at a dedicated tent on site

and through performances on stage.
Audiences will be held in awe by Hoop —

Dancer DALLAS ARCAND, an Aboriginal

entertainer from the Alexander (Kipohtakaw)

_ Plains Indian Cree Nation, located near

Edmonton. Dallas was also a finalist in the
“Aboriginal Icon” national singing contest and
also plays Aboriginal acoustic instruments,
most.notably the native flute.

ATAENSHA PRODUCTIONS from Wendake,
Quebec, offers Festival participants a unique

~ multicultural experience. The hosts of this

performance-workshop “THE PEOPLE UNITE!”
visit the diverse cultural
traditions of numerous
indigenous nations and
their union over the
centuries. Throughout
history, the drum has
been a significant
emblem of this union
for many: First Nations,
Africans, Americans,
Asians and Europeans
all state that the drum

AMERINDIENNE of Mont St-Hilaire, Quebec.

Originally developed by First Nations people

and introduced to the first Europeans, the
springtime cultivation of maple sap has
resulted in several centuries of maple _
syrup and sugar production. These staples
represent a vast array of delectable maple
products. Through storytelling and the sharing
of legends, ancestral cultivation methods
are described. You will learn maple sap ~
harvesting traditions and how these have
changed. Don’t miss out on the art and

Le Festival : Vitrine privilégiée des artistes
métis et des Premiéres nations

La culture des Premiéres nations occupe
une place de choix dans la programmation du
Festival depuis les débuts de |’événement, il
y a 10 ans. :

La programmation du Festival 4 cet égard ~
compte notamment une prestation de
DALLAS ARCAND, un danseur autochtone de
la Premiére nation crie-des plaines Alexander
(Kipohtakaw), tout prés d’Edmonton. Véritable
virtuose du cerceau, Dallas Arcand a |’art
d’époustoufler son public et la critique
puisqu’il a été finaliste au concours national
de chant « Aboriginal Icon ». Egalement
musicien, il joue de plusieurs instruments
acoustiques, dont la flite autochtone.

ATAENSHA PRODUCTIONS de Wendake, au

son spectacle-atelier multiculturel intitulé
L'UNION DES PEUPLES! Ce groupe vous
initiera aux diverses traditions culturelles
des nations amérindiennes et aux liens
qui les unissent depuis des siécles. Vous
découvrirez notamment |’importance :
historique des tambours et de leur symbole
en tant qu’instrument privilégié servant a
rassembler les peuples autochtones, qu’il
s’agisse de ceux des Premiéres nations,

d’Afrique, des Amériques, d’Asie ou d'Europe,
car tous s’entendent pour dire combien ils
se sentent interpellés par le langage du ~

tambour. Cette année, les festivaliers se

sentiront a leur tour conquis par la puissance

rassembleuse des tambours du groupe

C’est avec des artefacts traditionnels et au

son rythmé de chants autochtones que LA

MAISON AMERINDIENNE du Mont StHilaire,

a Québec, accueillera les festivaliers pour

qu’ils explorent les traditions anciennes

de la production du sirop d’érable. Les

_ Amérindiens ont été les premiers a faire la

récolte de la séve de !’érable au printemps
puis, a initier les premiers Européens. AU
cours des siécles, cette pratique a mene a
la fabrication du sirop et du sucre d’érable.
Ces denrées se déclinent aujourd’hui en un
vaste choix de délicieux produits d’érable.
