SUBJECT: Purchase of Electroni¢ Digital Tacheometer

Recommendation:

That the tender be awarded to C.Y.S. Scientific Instruments
Limited for & Sokkisha Set 3A Tota! Station at the total tender price
including tax of $11,235.00.

Background and Comments:

During budget discussions Counci! approved the Inclusion in our
Budget of $10,000 for an Electronic Digital Tacheometer to replace two
of our outdated survey Instruments. Tenders were received from five
companies with several of them offering alternatives. These are
listed on the attached recap sheet. Tenders numbered 1 - 4 are
alternatives offered which do not meet the specification. Tender

number 5 ITs the lowest priced tender which meets all=sthe
specifications. However, it is slightly above the budget set by

Counci! and therefore will require special approval.

The advantage of the total station as tendered compared to the
semi~total station alternatives are that the total station gives
automatic reduction of survey readings into accurate horizontal
distance, vertical distance, rectangular coordinates, in addition to

measuring distance and angles. It also provides digital readout
rather than raquiring the surveyor to read numbers against a reticule.
These features wilfi greatly reduce the possibility of error while

taking readings or converting readings into usable figures. |
therefore recommend that we stick with the svoecifications and purchase
the Sokkisha Set 3A Total Station. The amount above the allocated
$10,000 may be taken from the future reserve account In the sewer
utility.
