THE CORPORATION OF THE C Q U N C | | CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM OCT 6 -~ 1986 MEMORANDUM October 2, 1986 TO: City Administrator FROM: City Engineer SUBJECT: Bicycle Baffles in Underpass ~ Public Works Committee September 30, 1986 RECOMMENDATION: Tnat the City proceed with the Installation of bicycle baffles on the sidewalk through the underpass desplte the Engineer's report on the Ineffectiveness of the baffles. o BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: Subsequent to a Council resolution to Install bleycle baffles at both ends of the underpass, ! reported to the Public Works Committee that these baffles would not be effective due to the narrow sidewalk width and the req'irement for wheelchair accessibility which meant that the baffles would not be over lapping on the sidewalk. The attached sketch shows the most restrictive baffles that could be placed because of the width of the sidewalk and, as you can see, there is a gap of 400 mm between the two ends of the baffles. The Committee, nevertheless, wishes to have the baffles installed as per the previous recommendation with signs attached to the baffles as an additional incentive to get cyclists to walk bicycles through the underpass.
