Monday. June 17, 2002 letter to galleries and internation web project Page Subject: letter to galleries and internation web project Date: Mon, 17Jun2002 13:14:04+1000 From: "Jonathan Jones" To: (Jainavvarren@hotma.il.com, grunt gallery International Project Web Transmission: - issues of the body, transgressing geographical barriers and space The idea at this stage is to determine three partners: Folly (UK), grunt gallery (Canada), and potentially an Australian organisation. The international interaction of this project will explore the geographical barriers that the Internet allows people / artists to overcome in the current digital era. Each country will commission a lead artist currently practising in live arts (performance arts). If this is publicised well, we will have a wide variety of artists and members of the general public from all three countries taking part in the discussion. The artists will then go away for a month to create a piece of work which responds to this dialogue as well as one which comments on performance specifically intended for web transmission: issues of the body, transgressing geographical barriers and space, etc. At the end of the month, the audience will be invited back online to experience the art pieces. Each piece of work will take place on a different evening, so in essence it will be like a mini festival. The artist will perform in his/her host venue, but not to an open audience. If people want to experience the performance, they will have to log on and watch the live web cast. A text dialogue box will run alongside of the online performance, encouraging discussion to take place while the performance is happening. Another idea is to broadcast the event into a public space while the online transmission is taking place, for example, onto the town hall buildings or onto the concrete of a large open space. As passer-by's wander past they will be able to see a projected image of the performance and the running dialogue of the participants online. This will hopefully encourage curiosity in an audience who would not normally engage with this particular artistic medium. Leaflets will be distributed with the URL information and an invitation for them to log on when they return home. Funding The easiest way to deal with this is for each host to seek funding from the appropriate bodies in their own countries. Possibilities are being determined under a funding stream for Folly called Shooting Live Artists: http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/shootinglive/ BBC, Arts Council of England and b.tv, supports this stream. This project will give all three organisations a lot of high profile coverage in the UK (including being on the BBC web site for two years). grunt gallery has organised a Performance Arts Biennial Festival, which will reoccur in 2003. The 2001 festival saw the performance with Folly Gallery and Performance artist, Hester Reeve, in which this project is conceived from and could take place during the 2003 festival.
