BLN ABI ie te Bankable vacation time cut Less severance for health executives NEW EXECUTIVES HIRED by the new- ly-created health authorities can't expect lucrative severance provisions, says health services minister Colin Hansen. While he says taxpayers should antici- pate paying good money for good people, they won’t be taking massive amounts of cash away from them if fired or if their jobs disappear, The province is putting together a a ser ies of contract guidelines following the $700,000 paid out last March to a senior health care administrator dismissed when her job was eliminated when the. now-de- funct South Fraser health region was merged with a number of other health re- gions. Pat Zanon received $465,400 — two years’ salary — but also a healthy amount for banked vacation time and unused sick time. The two years’ salary is considered fairly normal for senior executives, said Hansen. But the amount of vacalion time that can be banked and then paid out has been severely cut back. ; In Zanon's case, the banked vacation lime dated back to the early 1990s. “As of 1998, it was eliminated by the previous government,” said Hansen of the ability to bank large amounts of unused vacation time. The amount of vacation time Zanon could accumulate existed in her contract prior to 1998. Hansen doubts there are many, if any, bureaucrats who still have provisions giving them that kind of bene- fit. Zanon’s sick leave payout worked out to 50 per cent of what was accumulated, “That kind of language was consistent with the language in collective agreements,” said Hansen. “We're reviewing that to see if it is tives . are appropriate.” Hansen did note that the pressures and job ex- pectations on senior health care exec- such that they'll face burn out if § they don’t take full ad- Vantage va- cation lime | allotied to them. T h e guidelines will apply to all senior executives hired in the provin- cial public sector. It’s nat yet known what kind of bills laxpayers will face once the new health authorities have finished putting together their senior executive levels. The executives now working for the Northern Health Authority are, for the most part, senior administrators and Colin Hansen others who worked for smaller health care authorities, Those smaller authorities were rolled up into the larger one. Hansen said severance provisions in contracts of departing executives will be honoured. Patty Stewart of the Northern Health Authority did not have immediate details of severance provisions of its senior exec- utives, “But the financial people have told me there is nothing like that $700,00,” said Stewart in referring lo Zanon’s severance package.
