"You design your milling facility around) your
breadbasket," says Repap B.C.'s Woodlands General
Manager Dan Tuomi. Because the wood near
Smithers tends to be smaller than that from the coast,
the Hew saw seemed right for ihe Smithers operalion.

trucked to Smithers. . oe

The cost of trucking (roughly $4 per cubic metre

between Smithers and Carnaby) is ‘minimal when.

compared to the recovery from the thinner ‘saw,
Tuomi says. .

The local mill cuts logs with diameters ranging
from four to ten inches (10-25 centimeters), to
produce. two by four, twa by six, two by eight and
one inch lumber.= ~ oe

These are North American lumber sizes, but Hall
points out that Repap is now also supplying European
and Asian markets with North American lumber.

New houses in Japan, for example, are being built
to North American standards.

"Especially since Kobe," Hall says, noting that the
earthquake in this Japanese city spurred a demand for
stronger, safer, wood frame dwellings.

Since its installation the Hew saw has run at about
98% efficiency. Thal compares to an average of 90%
for most mill saws, Hall says. .

But the efficiency is not provided by the saw alone.
While one Hew is working, the saw filers on cach
shift are kept busy honing the ‘replacements and
making sure any down time is kept to a minimum.
