Letter To the editor, It appears that neither our distinguished scien- tists nor our Government Regulatory Agencies can be completely trusted to protect our most vital in- terests, our lives. ‘A study done by the Institute in late U.S. Cancer (NCI) released Terrace Review __. Agriculture Canada says that they are con- cerned. They should be, but that concern should extend to more than farmers, Research done as long ago as 1966 shows that phenoxy herbicides or their dioxin contaminants ‘could be found in orange peels, wheat, tomatoes, milk, cream, muscle, liver, kidney, fat, blood, urine and fish from the Great lakes. ~ It has also been found in the air over Saskat- chewan, and in the air where forestry workers are applying phenoxy herbi- cides. Furthermore, Raloff, reporting in Science News last year, provides evidence that indicated it is likely that all individuals in the developed countries .Of the world, are con- taminated with the dioxin found: in phenoxy herbi- cides. Our own Theodor Ster- ling of SFU though, pro- vides the most alarming evidence in his recent review of the risks in- volved in a publication in a Swedish Science journal. Sterling shows that there are significantly elevated risks of contract- ing Other cancers as-well as -Of having unfavorable outcomes: of pregnancy Environmentalists coming up roses | 1986, finds that farmers - from exposure to these pesticides. The NCI report says’ that three percent of newly diagnosed cancers and cancer deaths will be due to Non-Hodgkin’s lym- phoma. In Canada, this. amounts to perhaps 1500 people per year dying from this disease. In the USA. it will be 10 times ‘that amount. I did a crude estimate ‘based on extrapolating this three percent figure Council LEGACY AT LAST Letters to Terrace coun- cil from Skeena MLA Dave Parker and Provin- cial Secretary Elwood . Veitch have confirmed ap- -proval of Terrace’s ap- plication to the Expo Legacy Fund. The city will receive a total of $162,916 in three installments for the construction of acom- munity bandshell in Little Park and additions to the. public swimming pool. Total cost of the projects is estimated at $488,750. POSTAL CUTBACKS OPPOSED At the Jan. 27 meeting of Terrace council it was resolved that a letter be directed to the Canada Post Corporation express- ing opposition to reduc-: tion of postal services, in- cluding the installation of _ *‘superboxes’’ in the Ter- race area and cutbacks to ©. home delivery of mail. around the world for: a 40 to 50 year exposure period and came up with around 2.5 million victims for.this disease alone. If one includes the in- creased risks of other cancers aS a possibility, many lung, stomach, liver, soft tissue sarcomas, will also be accounted for by this contaminant. - The over-all death toll could be over five million from this pesticide alone. Clearly, there is no free lunch. — - The worst discovery for me personally was that scientists, the so-called ex- perts that we have come to trust and look for salva- tion to from the mounting technological problems that threaten life on this planet, cannot be trusted. These revelations, com- ing on the heels of the earlier DDT, DDE, Diel- drin, Mercurial, Methoxy- chlor pollution scandals, lead me to believe that we must have new criminal laws to control the pollu- tion of this planet and its living organisms.. The ethic of enriching the few on the suffering of the many must be turned around if the human crash is not to join the crash of those other species we are now destroying. We need to manage the resources of this world on the basis of respect rather than the principle of an expanded profit margin, Jorma Jyrkkanen, - ‘Terrace, B.C. munity. ‘tion, Statement — | of poli icy of ‘Due to a regrettable oversight the. To the editor, It is ironic that the Jan. 28, 1987 issue of the Ter- race Review proclaims ’ with banner headlines that ‘Terrace Comes of Age’’, while page 22 contains a classified ad secking a. ‘reliable babysitter — preferably white. We may be proud of our new:status as a bona fide city but we can not be ‘so proud of a newspaper that. will accept the inclu- , sion of this racist material, no matter how hard up for revenue. As a reliable and white resident, I am appalled. . F. Mackie - Terrace, B.C...
