Protecting our water for clean, wet summer fun Contributed by GUY OSACHOFF of the SKEENA HEALTH UNIT DID ‘YOU know. that our recreational waters are becoming increasingly contaminated? _ Canadians have an abundance of fresh and salt water that can be used for recreational purposes. Unfortunately, waters in and around urban centres and agricul- tural regions are becoming in- creasingly contaminated. There are many sources of con- tamination, These include: sewage or industrial waste dis- ccharged into rivers, agricultural run-off (including manure, fertil- izers and pesticides) and urban run-off such as fertilizers which: promote algae and weed growth. Other sources of pollution in- clude: storm water run-off, animal feces, numerous. bathers (especially those with infections), oil and gasoline spills from power boats and marinas and pollution from boateis. Microbiclogical . contamination such as poorly treated sewage can cause a number of illnesses. The most common are gastroin- testinal illnesses such as diarrhea — and respiratory, ¢yé, car, nose or throat infections. Chemical pollutants may also pose health risks but disease causing microorganisms from poorly treated sewage are a prealer risk, Swallowing water is the main way pollutants enter the body. They may also gain cniry through broken skin or through the cars, eyes or nose. Other physical hazards are also possible when swimming in pol- luted water. If waier is not clear due to con- tamination or weed growth, ab- jects like rocks and broken glass much less visible and more likely to cause injury. There are many ways individu- als can help to keep recreational water safe: -Encourage your municipality and local industry to treat waste properly -If you live in a rural area make sure your septic system works properly -Practise pollution-free boating by disposing of human wastes hygienically -Avoid using fertilizers’ near recreational water . Pick up your pet’s droppings and dispose of them hygienically -Take limiled amounts of food to beaches to discourage animals and birds which leave droppings. Don’t feed animals and birds and securcly close garbage bins -Avoid going in the water if you have an open wound or an infec- tion -Don’! use soap in recreational water, Soap nourishes algae and bacteria, helping them to grow -Disinfect atl drinking water from lakes, rivers or streams, No matter how clean it looks boil it for five minutes. Local health authorities monitor the water quality al public beaches on a_ regular basis throughout the bathing season. They test the water using am ap- propriate pollution indicator organism, This is a common micro- organism in the human digestive tract which shows the presence of fecal contamination. Local health authorities are also responsiblefor investigating any illness or injuries resulting from bathing at public beaches. If the number of reported prob- lems is unusually high the authorities will either increase thelr monitoring of water quality or close the beach to the public. In some cases, such as an out« break of illness, tests for discase- causing organisms such as viruses are conducted, The public is notified in various ways, including media reporis and signs along the shoreline when a body of water is consider- ed unsuitable for swimming. More details on the reason for the closure and the potential health risks invalved can be ob- tained from the local health authorilies, . ee PITCH-IN CANADA!
