TERRACE FIREFIGHTERS clean up after ox- tinguishing a fire accidentally started on Kalum Kids start fire TWO CHILDREN accidentally set their home on fire this past Thursday October 9 at a townhouse on 3506 Kalum. They were playing with a lighter in their upstairs bedroom when a bed was ignited. Deputy Fire Chief Rick Owens says the mother of the two children woke up to discover the up- stairs portion of the house smothered in smoke. No smoke detectors were found on the premises. Fortunately the upstairs window broke and dis- sipated the heat, making it easier to extinguish the fire. The fire was put out in 10 minutes and no one Intel Pentium MMX 166MHz Multimedia system | « 16 MB EDO Ram * 2.0 Gig Hard Drive -‘- * 93.6 PnP Modem: » 15" SVGAColor Monitor inched” * 3 years parts and labour warranty For This | -OR ALL OF THIS Pentium Il MMX 300 MHz Multimedia System » 92 MB EDO Ram + 4 Gig Hard Drive + 56.6 K PnP Modem ’ * 15" SVGA Colour Monitor Included * 5 Year Limited Warranty For This ®, ELECTRONIC FUTURES © 4710 Keith Ave. ¢ 635-7767 Tne Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 15, 1997 - A7 Explosives used to blast the earth and unravel puzzle SCIENTISTS ARE breaking new ground in the earth’s inner core. And they came to the northwest to do it. For the last 13 years, hundreds of geos- cientists across Canada have been probing beneath the earth’s surface in an attempt to get to the botiom of our country’s founda- tion. , Earlier this summer they were concentrat- ing in the area just north of Terrace —- from Stewart and north cast to Watson Lake. “We are trying to unravel the jigsaw puzzle that is Canadian geography,”’ said Ron Clowes, director of the Lithoprobe project and geophysics professor at the earth and ocean sciences department at UBC. The Lithoprobe project studies the growth of the continent from it’s earliest begin- nings, about 4,000 million years ago, by using key areas across the country that represent this geological jigsaw. The study in this area, which includes three primary corridors (between the Great Slave Lake region and the Pacific Coast), is the final one in the overall study. This is the only place on carth that geos- cientists can investigate 4,000 million years of the earth’s history, said Clowes. This area is unique because the rock record spans 90 per cent of earth’s history — dating from about 4000 million years to the relatively young formations the oc- curred between 1500 to 500 million years (that’s young when you consider the fact that the earth is about 4.6 billion years old), Some of the rock west of the mountain belt (which was under water until about 400 miliion years ago) is known as exotic ter- rain — having formed away from North America and attached to the continent through the process of plate tectonics. Measuring the earth’s lithosphere — the upper rigid 100-250 km of the planet — re- quires a multi-disciplinary amalgamation. But the primary method that drew about 65 people to descend on the earth’s surface this past summer involved detonaling a series of explosives. Called the Seismic Refraction Method, scientists use extremely sensitive instru- ments to measure and record the sound waves that travel from the surface of the earth to about 100 km deep and then up again, and travelling about 600 km sway from the source. Scientists, technicians and over 600 in- struments set up shot points for detonating explosives that stretched from Stewart to Watson Lake. This area is unique because the rock record spans 90 per cent of earth’s history — dating from about 4000 million years to the rel- atively young formations the oc- curred between 1500 to 500 million years. "We used explosive charges put into 180 feet deep holes — charges ranged from 1000 to 3000 kg of explosives,’’ explained Clowes, Instruments detected the ground motion aud digitally clocked the energy, recording it in a similar way as seismic wiggles, he added. “‘The next step is interpreting the speed in which sound propagates in dif- ferent types of rocks,’’ Sound travels at different velocities in different rock minerals, and geoscientists have to interpret the information to draw up a crude map of the earth’s lithosphere. The process of interpreting the informa- tion will probably take two to three ycars, a short time considering the massive frame of time they are working with.
