RIVERBOAT DAYS Seniors ALL ADULT On golden pool. ECSTATIC! That was the only way to describe the Blueback’s reaction to their performance at the AAA provincial long course championships. With six of cight swimmers making finals, a couple of near misses and four medals, it’s little wonder. And for Kevin Andolfatto, 14, it was a golden experience, Ranked second, two seconds be- hind the fastest. 100m Breast swimmer in his age group, he had his work cut out. But, says coach Mike Carlyle, Andolfatto always tums it on at the provincials and this time was no exception, Level at the turn, Andolfatto outduelled his opponent to post a personal best time and take the gold by a couple of tenths. His time of 1:13.66 also qualified him for the youth na- tionals, the first Blueback to do So for two years. Carlyle also expects it to be one of the top 20 times in Canada when the stats are released later this year. Also bringing home gold were the three Blusback members of the Points North girls 11-12 years _ Telay team: Marina. Checkley, Stacey Parr and Audrey Erb. Anchoring the 4x50m Free ef- fort, Checkley entered the water trailing the Calgary team by haif a second. But even that lead wasn’t enough for the Albertans as she from front Beating “It was a perfect day for.a tri- athion,’’ said Warmer. ‘‘It was maybe a little bit hot, but it was Teally great weather.”’ What did leave him disappointed was the low numbers of participants. Only 67 athletes participated in this year’s triathlon, down from the 121 athletes in the 1993. tri- athlon. - ts disappointing. when we do. : so much work to organize it,”’ Warmer said. While he is pleased with the num- ber of teams in the triathlon, Warner would like to see more individuals compete. He thinks offering a half-triathlon may draw more individual entries for next year. Warner would like to see an event next year for competitors to com- plete a 500m swim, 20 km cycle and 5 km run. “Tt would-be meant to encourage people to participate who have a limited amount of time to train,”’ he said. He added that a triathlon in Ques- nel on the same day may also ex- plain the small tum-out. Organizers are planning the 1995 triathlon for mid-August in hopes of drawing more athletes and Street #406 Rookies Claus & Morwyn Wolnowsk! Rookies Claus and Morwyn Wolnowski have teamed up with Dennis Bailey for the 1994 race season. Dennis received Top Points B Street last year which was his rookia year. Hopefully both Morwyn and Claus will have the sama success in their rookie year, CONGRATULATIONS were in order for Blueback gold medalist Kevin Andolfatto and Swim BC technical director Clive Rushton was on hand at the AAA provincials to do just that. unleashed an amazing 29.5 sec- ond leg to take the race by half a body length Carlyle suspects that per- formance will be a top-10 time in Canada, And it set the squad alight, he added. ‘‘It sparked everybody, it was quite the ‘motivational swim.” _ By the time it was all over, the girls:had added a bronze medal in the medley relay, despite not hav- ing a- butterfly specialist and Andolfatio picked up one as well -in the 200m Breast. Dylan Evans, 10, finaled four times in his first provincials, finishing with a fourth and a fifth in posting four personal bests, Seth Downs, 14, made a habit of personal bests through the weekend, his best effort coming in the 200m Free where he fin- ished sixth, Tristan Brown, 12, also swam to a sixth in his 50m Free and Audrey Erb was eighth twice, Most frustrating result belonged to Stacey Parr who missed out on the 100m Free by just 5/LO0ths of a second. The relays, however, provided some compensation, Only. having expected four swimmers to make the finals at best, Carlyle said he was delighted with the way they’d responded to the challenge. WITH A LITTLE: help from a triathlon volunteer, this swimmer emerged from the 59 degree F Lakelse Lake as one of the top two fastest swimmers in the 1994 Skeena Valley Triathlon. easing the load for the Parks of- ficers who supervise the event. Because July is the busiest month for the Parks office, they have asked the triathlon organizers to change the triathlon date. Warner thinks an August triathlon will work better for everybody. “By mid-August, more people are back from holidays so we’d haye more participants and more volunteers, ’* sai Warner. The temperature of the lake would alsa be more inviting by the middle of August, he added. . At this year’s triathlon, the athletes waded into 59 degres F water, just two degrees above the 37 degree minimum for the tri- athlon insurance.
