They added that their opera tions won’t be affected if ap-. plications for 623,000 cubic metres of wood a year for 25- _ years don’t go ahead under the now-cancelled Pulpwood Agreement 17... The three, Orenda Forest Products, Eurocan. and. Nor-" thwood, joined Skeena Cellulose in applying for the Stewart location | wood, Orenda Forest” - Product? 8 Hugh Cooper, it had wanted a guarantee of 100,000 cubic metres a year-near Stewart, said it is going ‘ahead with.plans to build a pulp mil! at Stewart. Cooper said Orenda didn’t really need the guarantee but applied to protect its opera- tions. Lo “Cutting rights with ‘pulpood agreements are allocated to specific areas. One of those areas was.in one of our chart areas. We built the roads in that area so why should we let anybody else g0 in. - there,” he Mill plan: forges. TERRACE — A forest com- pany which now exports logs will submit an application in the next few weeks to build a pulp mill at Stewart. Orenda Forest Products, once called Asitka Resources, wants to construct a $144 million pulp mill producing 105,000 tonnes of pulp a year at Stewart. Plans also include the con- struction of a fine paper mill br- inging total project cost to ap- proximately $300 million, said Orenda’s president, Hugh Cooper last week. Orenda announced earlier this year it wanted to build the mill when it applied for a pulpwood guarantee but its con- struction application now begins a major governmental environmental and economic review and analysis. Although that fibre guarantee from front process for ‘Pulpwood. “Agree- ment 17°has now. been cancell- ed; Cooper says it won't affect Orenda’ Ss plans. “We'd like to start construc- tion inthe spring. That’s the target. It (Pulpwood Agreement 17) doesn’t affect our plans,” said Cooper in adding the com- pany has sufficient existing fibre supplies-of its own and through purchases. ; Cooper had earlier said the pulpwood guarantee was need- ed io demonstrate security of supply as a way of obtaining financing but now says that isn’t necessary. Orenda will finance the pro- ject through a joint venture with an Asian company but those details haven't been announced. ‘“‘We want to wait until. the approval process is finished,” said Cooper. The technology to be used in Gov't axes deal pulp markets. - Lightfoot-added the company: had not invested a great deai of . money in its expansion plans because it had first wanted to secure a fibre supply under the pulpwood agreement. Skeena Cellulose was con- sidered the lead applicant in the Pulpwood Agreement I7 pro- cess. [t asked for the wood more than a year before the province announced the start of the ap- plication process and had also applied for pulp fibre west of Williams Lake as part of its Port Edward expansion plans. The company was not suc- cessful in the latter bid but of- ficiats said they remained confi- . dent the expansion could go ahead with existing supplies and guarantees under the pulpwood agreement. Skeena Cellulose’s plans call- ” ed for a third pulp line at Port Edward requiring two million cubic metres of pulp a year to increase production capacicy to 820,000 metric tonnes a year. Pulpwood Agreement t7 was first advertised early this year. Planned public hearings into the applications had been scheduled for this spring but were postponed when the govern- ment said it wanted more infor- mation, ahead _ the pulp mill ' ‘was- ‘developed i in.
