Koto Ilo, a Zen temple abbott in Nagoya, Japan, was in town from June 18-23. He is the spiritual head of the Terrace Dai-Ko-Ji Zen centre, }io belongs to the Sota branch of Zen. There ate. two olher schools as well -. Rinzai and Obaku. Soto zen emphasizes the impor- tance of meditation. . ' Dressed ‘simply: and comforlab- ~ ly in a grey kimono and a black samue (jacket), the slender. and head-shaven Ito sips tea and talks in Japanese while centre member Jeanette Delpori translates. . He notes that Terrace and its - surroundings remind him of a similar “Japanese. town. called ae Nagano. This site also fealures # town surrounded by. mountains with a river running through it. He is here to: help guide the lo- cal Zen group with their prac- lices, including a tea ceremony. — Delport; who is fluent in, Japa-.~ nese, started the centre about.two years ago. There is now a core group of cight members. -She met Ilo in 1968, when she was living in Japan studying Zen,- Ito became a monk when he~ was 14 years old, and has remained so for the past 30 years. ‘Delport noles that there are two ~ ways to become a monk.
