TERRACE CARPET DOCTOR Ray Rioux gets great satisfaction from carpet cleaning. 16-37
~ Community Futures helped Ray and his wife Jackie to realize their goal of buying the business.

The new owners of Terrace Car-
pet Doctor are Ray and Jackie
Rioux. Ray had worked as a carpet
cleaner for previous owners, Ed
and Gwen Cooper, since August of
1990, Ray explains how it all came
to be, "Ed had talked about selling,
I needed more work. I was only
working part-time, and my father-
in-law prompted me.to investigate
the possibility of buying it."

With a loan from a bank and the
help of 16-37 Community Futures
through profit and loss projections,
business plan and a small business
loan, Ray and Jackie bought the
business on March 1 of this year.

good reputation. That helps." Com-
munity Futures is available for on-
going advice and they have access
to the borrower's financial state-
ments until the loan is paid off,
Ray explains.

Ray and a new part-time
employee are available for resi-
dential, commercial, furniture, and
automobile cleaning and are on-
call for water damage problems.
By next spring, Ray hopes to buy
another vacuum specially for flood
damage jobs. Jackie looks after the
office work and their three
children.

The Terrace Carpet Doctor oper-
ates with a totally self-contained
van-mounted steam cleaner. The
van is also equipped with a hot
water heater and a gas powered
engine. Only two hoses (the steam
cleaner and the vacuum), with one
wand, go into the house or com-

move their own furniture out of

the room(s) to be cleaned, but they
will do it, if necessary. .
Ray gets great satisfaction from
carpet cleaning, "You can see the
difference, either when you're
cleaning the carpet or when you

‘drain the water, It makes the job

worthwhile." Born and raised in
Terrace, his job also allows him to
meet new people and keep in
touch with old acquaintances.
Much of the commercial work
takes place at night after the busi-
nesses close. Sometimes Ray and
his helper work all night.

They do follow-ups to check that
their customers are happy with the
work. Regular repeat customers (3
or more times per year) are
entitled toa 20 percent discount on
their 25 cent per square foot rate
(without Scotchguarding) or 30
cents per square foot with Scotch-
guarding. Seniors (over 65) are
always entitled to a 25% discount.
