Editorial This Is how the trip began for Dorothy: carried off In some windy music and lights by a tornado, personailzed in a con- trolled frenzy by dancer Frances Brodie. continued from page 22 gallery, Production support in the form of sets, lighting and costumes, combined ingenuity, subtlety and a continual stream of pleasant visual surprises, courtesy of Dave Battison, Rose Lynn Fleury and a host of other people. The direction by Merry Hall- sor and Sharon Lynch featured one interesting device after an- other, including an anthropo- morphized yellow brick road of young dancers decked out in brick-scored tunics that led the four companions to the Emerald City, and a group of sensuous poppies dancing through a cloud of opiate vapor that nearly way- laid the heroes on their way. Acting and singing by limber Scarecrow Alan Weston, stilted and stiff Tin Man Todd Bellamy and Cowardly Lion Alexis Maikapar was lively, ac- — complished, and energetic, but Pam Kerr’s reading of Dorothy, close to the original in innocent and virtuous courage, provided the axis around which the other characters were able to revolve in all their off-the-wall © uniqueness. Norah Ferguson deserves Stage Exit of the Year award for her rather abrupt meltdown af- ter being doused with water by the heroine, and Doug Rosz- mann goes into the record books for Jive in his portrayal of The Wiz. The casting department is to be complimented on the selec- tion. of contrasting witches, -spaced-out Addaperle played by Tania MacKenzie and Lynn Leydier-Frolick’s squeaky-clean Glinda. The remainder of the supporting players were enthusi- astic to the last Munchkin and appeared to know exactly what they were doing on the stage, a triumph of directing and con- centrated rehearsal. Pervading the entire produc- tion was the Terrace Communi- ty Band, and they’ve never sounded better. The ensemble ran a gamut of styles going from ~ music hall boilerplate to torch and blues. The variety in this play was daunting, and those of us who weren’t able to be in Calgary earlier this year now understand why they came away with first prize. ‘Both evening performances sold out, and the Saturday matinee left only 20 unoccupied seats. It’s a record for the R.E.M. Lee. The arts community in this city is starting to: look very up- town, and the Terrace Little Theatre, Theatre Alive and the community band all deserve our thanks for some e top-of-the-line entertainment. —= continued from page 4 negotiating team set up in Terrace, but he admitted that was a remote possibility due to the rarity of qualified claims negotiators. He did gain the support of the Kit- wancool Band Council, with whom he’s worked for many years, and it was obvious that they consider him a sincere and honorable man, but when the polls from native communities came in the support was overwhelm- ingly for Fulton.
