TERRACE — “For Leo Casavant, spending a day in a wheelchair ‘made him realize the tremendous amount of courage that Rick Hansen has‘to travel around the world in a wheelchair, raising funds for spinal research and rehabilitation. by Daniele Berquist On the morning of Monday, Feb. 23 the challenge Bézah for Casa- vant, the qanager of the Terrace Co-op. He was to spend ap- proximately 12, hours in a wheelchair, doing a regu- lar days work, confined to a wheelchair. ‘‘When I got out of bed Monday morning, I didn’t even. stand up’’, . said Casavant. ‘‘I went straight into my wheelchair.’’ . Casavant said he found it a lot of fun at first get- ting around his home, wheeling his chair. How- ever, he encountered pro- blems throughout the day. ‘On his way to the family car, his wife Doris'and son. Michael tried to carry him down the stairs of their house, Casavant said it was the strangest feeling to be at the mercy of others, especially when they almost dropped him because of his weight. . However, Casavant did make it to his car safely. He was determined to do | everything ‘as indepen- dently as possible. Driving his car to work was another challenge Casavant. encountered during his day as an in- valid. The event was held at the Thornhill Community Hall. Beach Nite held. There was an excellent turn out at the Terrace ~ Arena on Feb. 26 for Beach Nite, according to organizers’ reports. The event had 32 par- ticipants and raised a sum of $134.30 for the Rick Hansen fund. . It was reported by Elaine Parmenter that no one suffered sore muscles after a full hour anda half of aerobics. ’ Beach Nite was spon- sored by the Department of. Parks and Recreation . and supported by fitness enthusiasts of Terrace.
