DED
TORONTO (CP) — The
National Council of Jewish
Women of: Canada has
announced the award of two
Irene Samuel. Scholarships:
for 1977-78 to Risa Shore of
Toronto atid Cherie Klein of
Winnipeg. The scholarships
are offered to Jewish
women “furthering their
’ education in Judaic studies
with the intention of
teaching in Jewish schools
in Canada.

popcorn

SAULT STE. MARIE,
Ont. (CP) — When Leo
Bernardo retired four. years
ago after 2 years in a
lumber products factory, he

couldn't face having nothing ©

to do.
So he entered the popcorn
business. :

“When I retired 1 wanted .

to live, not die,” the 69-year-
old resident of Sault Ste.
Marie said through an in-

terpreter. “I had to do
something.
“I hada chance-tobuy this

popcorn machine in Toronto
‘or $700. It looked good.so 1
bought it. It gave mea
reason to walk and exer-
cise.’’

Bernardo, wheeling his

cart along the streets, has:

become a familiar sight for
youngsters in the city's west

end. -
The bag of popcorn he
used to sel] for 10 cents now
costs 25 “but the kids, they
still buy as much as before.”
On a good day, he can
make more than $10, but he

. doesn't keep track of his

earnings. He says as long as |

he’s not losing money, he’s
happy.

In a year, the vendor goes
through 100 pounds of
popcorn, a gallon of coconut
oil and. a box of salt—an
investment of about $50, A
vending licence costs $60.

When business is bad, the
birds in Bernardo'’s back
yard have a popcorn feast.
“My popcorn is always
fresh,” he-says.

days, and slow, wet sum--
