My tather's mother lived with us and m mother’s father lived wit an aunt but spent his days at our house while my aunt taught school . Looking back, 1 realize’ whal richness my grandparents added to my life. Every evening during the pre- supper ‘‘crabby hour” Grandma sat in the rocking chair in the living room an read to us kids, leaving Mum in peace in the kit- chen, What fascinating characters we met during thathour’s nursery rhymes, fairy tales, Squirrel Nutkin, Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin, Peter Pan and Captain Hook, Alice and the Mad Hatter, characters [rom The Jungle Book and Just So Stories-.” Grandma had time to teach COD ; , me to knit and that really required patience with my clumsy little fat hands. I adored Grandma and was her willing slave. Grandad was a4 bearded Scot with a glorious full voice. My memories are filled with his songs, poetry, stories and strong political views. He had a “no non- sense from children” at- titude. I remember vividly the expressicn on his, face and the tone of his voice when Linadvertantly hit him in the back of the neck with a pea when I was fooling around with a pea shooter!!! Few children today have intimate daily contact with grandparents and families are the poorer for it. In every community there are grandparents who rarely see grandchildren and children who don't know 1h a Gy i ve ‘could adopt Focus on the family - their grandparents. If we “honorary grandparents’’ into our families - benefit. "fe's just a formality, it doesn’t really mean anything” says your friend as he asks you to co-sign for a loan. Well, don’t you believe it!! is the word from the Consumer Action League. Basically, the situation is this: If you have co-signed a Joan and the person you co-signed with doesn’t pay, you are responsible for paying. And if that person leaves town, the lender won't spend too much time looking for him or her, he'll come to you. It’s easier and cheaper. Remember, by signing with that person, you have ac- cepted equal responsibility for seeing that the loan is paid. we would all - Think twice before co- signing ! ! Can you afford to pay someone else’s debts?? The most important thing that parents can do for their children is to love each other. It is so easy for parents to assume love, lo take each other for granted. The pressures of jobs and child rearing put heav strains on the marital bond. But the relationship _bet- ween husband and wife is the core of the family and needs constant nurture. When parents ilove each other and express that love openly there is a security and stability in the family which is gained in no other way. Jehovah Witnesses convention July8-11 Larry Sandford, spokesman for the Terrace Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses announced that local delegates will play a major part during the four- day district convention of the religious group in Prince George, July 8-11, 1976. Sandford said that one of the highlights-of-the annual convention will be a full- costume Bible drama in- volving a cast of 21 local Witnesses. Overall director of the drama Garry But- terfield, one of the elders of _ the. Terrace Skeena congregation, explained that the group has been rehearsing for superal months. costumes and props used for the drama are made on an authentic basis by the local group. The overall program at Prince George will stress the great spiritual void in human society teday and how this void can be filled. Helping people is part of it. In an era of mass com- munication; newspapers, radio and television, it might seem that sucha form of propogating one's faith is outdated. . The statistics relating to the growth of Jehovah's Witnesses in their public work. of preaching and teaching the Bible do not support this theory. ; Reliable records show _ that more than haif of all the Jehovah's Witnesses in the world have become such in the past five or six years. That adds up to 1,364,904 new adherents to the faith since 1970-more than fifly percent of the international membership. ; Sandford said thal, “growth on a local basis is unbelievable. This in- cludes moral, religious and social issues that are being challenged by young people seeking a more com- prehensive understanding of the world in which they live and how to improve con- ditions in society. Asa result Sandford said, “many charismatic and evangelical movements ‘have developed as people seek greater meaning from religion.” He said they desire more than traditional religious affiliation and are seeking some personal religious experience. “There is division in many religious systems in the world,’ Sandford said. “Controversies rage aver morals and moral issues such as divorce, birth control, homosexuality, pre- marital sex and women’s liberation.” "As a result,” he said, “the media continually expresses the viewpoints of clergymen, psychologists and scholars relating to their opinions on these questions creating great confusion as to what is right and what is worng.”’ Sandford said the con- vention program will discuss these questions in the light of the counsel ‘outlines in the Bible. Discussing the spiritual needs of man, Sandford sald when man lives by the standards of the Bible he brings his life into harmony with God's will. “This brings him inner peace.and self respect," he said. Sandford said many cosmopolitan . or sophisticated people feel the Bible’s comments on human behavior are “our of touch with reality, outmoded.” “Time has .changed human governments and societies,’ Sandford said, “but it has not altered the individual needs of man. Only the Maker of man truly understands what these needs are and how they can best be supplied. Listening to Him ‘is’ still the most - advisable course for man,” he said. Mosquito control “The aim of S.C, John- son’s insect repellent in- formation program is to rovide widespread in- ormation on. mosquito control to ensure a pleasant happy summer of patio sitting, picnics, camping and other oudaor ac- tividies”’, says Jim Cullen, Technical Director. Mr. Cullen says that the first move is to eliminate breeding sites because these summer-breeding mosquitoes develop in still water and cannot survice the movement of flowing streams, Thus, they can breed around the house, cottage or camp, and a clean-up is the first move. Breeding sites can be prevented through reducing the amount of vegetation by mowing grass, removing weeds, trimming hedges and overgrown shrubbery which protect the mosquitces from the sun and wind, After that, eliminate. all water. ; For example, don’t let a Dr. Willard S.
