OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Lower Mainland medical health officers have been urging the GVRD board to filter our
water supply for over a decade. When Miranda Holmes of Save Georgia Strait. Alliance
contacted Vancouver's chief medical officer, John Blatherwick in December'92, he stated
he preferred filtration over secondary disinfection with chloramine, but was no longer
prepared to state this publicly, as he felt this would prompt the GVRD to commission
more reports and further delay the already overdue needed action,

The GVRD distribution system could potentially be a recipient for federal infrastructure
financial support.

Compensation, in cases of chemical contamination, is not an acceptable means of
mitigation, Mitigation of chemical impacts must be conducted at the source with strong

emphasis on prevention. :

The public has a low level of awareness of water quality concerns.
