It'll go beside Terraceview Lodge Housing p A LONG PLANNED ven- ture ta build housing next to Tertaceview Lodge on the bench has a new approach. Conceived a decade ago by the Dr. R.E.M. Lee Hos- pital Foundation, the plan is to. provide housing for people who, while they can live on their own, may need a little bit of extra help. And now the foundation has spun off the Terrace Mountain Manor project to a new group called the Ter- race Supportive Housing Society. Its plan is to construct a first-phase two-storey com- plex of 22 wheelchair acces- sible one-bedroom suites, one of which is for a resi- dent caretaker. Unlike earlier proposals requiring purchasers to come up with the purchase money on their own, this own is being sold on a life- lease basis, says society sales representative and lo- cal contractor Betty Barton, “The suites can be financed up to 75 per cent of the purchase price through a mortgage held by the Ter- race. Supportive Housing Sociely,’’ said Barton last week, When the purchaser no longer has any need of the suite, it is then sold back to the society for the original price less an administration fee. This way, said Barton, the society will have a reserve on hand. roject is revised The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 26, 1999 - A3 News In Brief A NEW SIGN and a new model signify a new ap- proach to a long-planned residential housing project on the bench next ta Terraceview Lodge. Each of the suites is 645 square feet. Barton said the complex will appeal to people who may need to use some of the services provided by Ter- raceview Lodge or who have a spouse in the ex- tended care facility, Although there is a new society running the project, the majority of its directors, for now, come from the RE.M. Voter update in progress A province-wide mail campaign is under way to update voter registration information, Provincial Chief Elec- toral Officer Bab Patterson said, Palterson said that in order to cut costs of a door-to- door enumeration, the provincial government has opted for mailing out voler information packages, as well as providing a toll fee phone number and a Web site to update voter information. Palterson hopes that this approach to enumeration wili improve the quality and consistency of the voters list in B.C, There is also a monthly maintenance fee and unit owners are responsible for their own utilities. Barton said construction could start as early as next month provided at least two- thirds of the units are sold. Worker Darrell Smith suspects the deal between Skeena Cellulose and West Fraser had more to do with politics than a good business deal. “West Fraser was looking for breaks from the govern- ment,” he said, referring to the recently approved log ex- port deal. *‘So this is a bit of a tradeoff,’’ “We're having the rug pulled out from under us for rea- - sons that we don’t fully understand,’’ Smith added.
