, B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 19, 1998 * MAKING CDs: Musicians in Terrace dan't have go to » Vancouver anymore if they want a professional quali- «ty recording studio, Chris Andrews, owner of Chris Andrews Digital Recording Studio, can make CDs and albums in his studio for a fraction of what it costs to make albums in the Lower Mainland. ‘Bands make CDs in local studio ‘FAMOUS MUSICIANS like Lenny Kravitz could theoretically make CDs in Terrace, now that a recording ‘studio here is fully equipped to do the job. « “Lenny’s doing what I’m doing or I’m doing what he’s tdoing,” said Chris Andrews, owner of Chris Andrews ‘Digital Recording Studio. : That’s because Andrews uses the same technology that Kravitz uses, called Protools, which is a software program ‘that allows him to record music onto a computer's hard ‘drive, » “All the big names use hard disk recording,”’ he said. It’s all digital recording —- you don’! need tapes canymare, so there’s no more tape noise. It’s way belter ‘sound quality.” : Andrews’ high technology turns audio into digital sig- ‘nals, which are recorded onto his computer’ s memory. He sean then cut and paste the music, as if it’s a word “docu- iment, { ‘The beauty about digital recording is you can just cut ‘and paste the sounds and if you do something wrong, you scan go back to the oziginal copy on the hard drive.’ _— Now that Terrace has pro-quality technology, musicians here don’t have to go to Vancouver to achieve pro quality results, he said. . And his prices are a fraction of what studios charge in Vancouver. Andrews spends most of the money he ears as X-Ray technician on his equipment. He estimated that his com- puter, speakers, microphones, instruments and recording rooms are worth more than $40,000, He says the sound quality is worth it “With this technology musicians can’t blame the cquip- ment if they sound bad,’’ he said laughing. One day, Andrews hopes his recording business will start paying the bills. “Tve always wanted to do recordings,” he said. “I’ve played the piano and guitar for years and I love music.”’ Andrews has a degree from the Trebas Institute of Recording Arts in sound engineering, but most of what he’s learnt, he said he’s taught himself, This year Andrews made CDs for bands like Kingfish, Fableway and Just Us. 98-99 playbill THE TERRACE LITTLE theatre has another exciting season in store for audiences, says Annelle Martindale, the theatre's organizer. “In general all the plays this season are fin, light comedies,’’ said Martindale.
