The Canadian Nalional In- stitute for the Blind (CNIB) has hired a new vision rehab specialist for the Skeena region. Connie Munson will be based in Kitimat and ex- pecls lo be up in Terrace at least once a month, Munson will be working closely with Dr. Tom Nagy, an opthamologist, based in Terrace, The CNIB has 48 clients in Terrace and 275 in an area strelching from the Charlottes to Burns Lake. Formerly those clients were served by a CNIB of- fice in Prince George. Ex- pert help, such as employ- ment counselors: for work- ing age clicnts, will still come out of that office, but overall the region will be far beller served, CNIB is expecting an in- creased need for ils services as the population ages, anticipaling its clicnt nun- bers to double. — Munson will offer a low vision clinic in Terrace once a month, Plus she’ll meet regularly with clients in the area, finding out what their goals are, and doing follow- up checks, Munson will also be a resource for communities and businesses. She can give them advice on acces- sibility issues for the blind. Wheelchair ramps are usually common, but what about bright painted crosswalk lines for the visually impaired. Terrace CNIB client Vince Cook pointed out the need for crosswalk lines to cily council here, Sidewalk poles the same Connie Munson gray as the sidewalk are also hard for the visually im- paired to spol. And bright lines on stair edges are helpful to many, including seniors. Munson will offer an ini- tial assessment to CNIB clients in the northwest and do regular —_—‘ follow-ups. She'll also refer clients. to other specialists’ when needed, CNIB is looking for dona- tions to help it offer low vi- sion clinics. It’s already had office space and furnishings donated. . Now Munson is hoping to buy a closed circuit TV magnification system which will allow something like a-cheque book to’ be magnified 60 times. CNIB hopes to raise $16,000 for this and other equipment ACTOSS the north- west, This month is also CNIB’s Eye Appeal campaign. The campaign raises money for wages, travel costs and overhead.
