Page C4 — Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 7, 1992 First grass drag memorable By RON NIESNER ‘Date: September 20. Destination: Smithers and the 3rd annual King of the Grass snowmobile drags. A friendly greeting at the gate from Frank Parker, a senior mem- ber of the host club, and we’re directed to the event staging area. A few more hours of track prep- aration and testing of machincs and competitors are mentally pre-_. paring to challenge the field. For me, today’s race will be dif- ferent from the Terrace event. Ken Gibson of Ken’s Marine has provided me with a Yamaha Ex- citer Il to ride in the Stock A class. [ve never raced on grass before but want to give ita try. At 660ft,, the course is longer than the usual 500ft. It also has a custom-built light tree and com- puterized timing system at the start and finish lines. It takes a little practice to get used to this set up. As it tums out, pit crews had to change the gearing on their ma- chines to accommodate the extra track distance. To ride on grass, a snowmobile needs a cooling system of some kind to protect the engine from melt dawn and the slide rail sys- tem from wearing out. That’s not a problem on snow, but on grass it’s very important. Spraying the sliders with water prior to the run reduces friction and liquid cooled machines re- quire.-a quick coupling system which is connected ta a container of ice water after each run. It’s a good idea to keep an cye on the ground in the pit area. This is a cow. pasture and patties are everywhere. No, they don’t help reduce fric- tion on the machines, but they provide humourous moments for the crews when someone steps in one. Dana Galloway, mike in hand, is again keeping the spectators in- formed and entertained. John Brown is pit boss for the day. The stock classes are the first to run. I don’t win a race but I will never forget the thrill of riding that sled to the line. Better luck next time, I guess.
