(CP) | Peterborough Sporttand Tigers and Belleville Cornerstone Blues say they split an Eastern Ontario Baseball Association — double-header July 8 although no games were played that day, ’ The league statistician has game sheets stalistics, and the names of the winning and losing pitchers for the double-header which went into the league’s record books. The statistics say Blues won the first game 6-4 and loft the second 5-3. Peterborough manager-coach Murry Nugent said at the time that one of the games was to make up for a game postponed earlier in the season. The other was moved up from the following week at the request of Belleville which planned to compete in a tournament. The Examiner later learned the lights at the park were not turned on the night the games were supposed to have been played. The newspaper. also learned Belleville Biues did not arrive here until the following day—July 9—for a scheduled game against the Tigers. Nugent said in a interview this week that he arranged the fictitious double-header to prevent the folding of the Peterborough teanl, He said that the chain of events started July 6 when pitcher-first baseman John Hughey was suspended for four games for his part ina brawl] June 15 with Port Hope's Dennis O’Brien. Five Peterborough players, unhappy ‘that U’Brien received _ onlya two-game suspension, threatened to quit, .- “At this point, I knew the team was on the verge of folding,” said Nugent. “The boys who had voted to qult r: club was in trouble. I had to try and do something to save this team,” Nugent said that in an attempt to keep the club together, he called Belleville team officials and asked if they would be interested in working something out with the Tigers that would quickly put four games together to complete Hughey’s 5 ion. . ugent said he and some of the Belleville team members, whom he would not identify, made oe game sheets and sta- tistics for the double-header. Nugent later sent the game sheets to the league office. “Nobody said anything because the game sheet doesn't have to be signed at all,” said Nugent. “The umpires don’t have to sign, neither do the coaches. All the league wants is the game sheets, that's all. We gave them those and nobody said anythi thing. I know it was illegal. 1 know it wasa risk, but we would have lost the team if & something hadn’t been done.
