LOCAL 1-417 MEMBERS SUGGEST NEW APPROACH At the three meetings held by Local 1-417 over the January 19-21 weekend, the members bluntly stated they would not settle for anything less than the Celgar settle- ment terms. They also exvressed ful] confidence in their Local officers and the Union Negotiating Committee. Showing their contempt for the employers’ association, they passed a resolution which requested the Union’s Negotiating Committee to explore the feasibility of enter- ing into direct negotiations with individual companies desiring to come to terms. BARRETT BACKS STRIKERS Coquitlam MLA Dave Bar- rett told some 100 persons at a Salmon Arm Motor Hotel meeting that the provincial’ government just keeps dump- ing the problems back on the municipalities. DAVE BARRETT NDP-MLA, Coquitlam Barrett also attacked the government’s role in educa- tion and its parks policy. Pro- vincial parks, he said, are “open for fast-buck promot- ers.” He indicated he will have some revelations to make in the legislature on mining claims in Tweedsmuir Park. ‘The qualifications of the three women cabinet minis- ters were questioned by Bar- rett, who said they were given no portfolios when made ministers so they could spend more time with their families. He added, “I know many wo-. men who would like to be given $6,000 to spend more time with their families.” Referring to the interior lumber strike, he said the cost of living in the interior is 16 per cent higher than at the coast, “And when the av- erage workingman doesn’t bring enough wages home, it affects the entire community.” Bob Schlosser, President of Local 1-417, IWA, reports that his Local Union made a car available to Mr. Barrett in order to enable him to visit the sub-local strike headquar- ters and various picket lines. Mr. Barrett indicated in a per- sonal interview with IWA representatives that he was highly impressed with the - spirit of the strikers and their determination not to return to work unless “parity within the term of the next collec- tive agreement” is achieved. s
